Baseball accounts for 24 runs and 37 hits in DH sweep of Lourdes

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – Both games on Saturday's afternoon saw CU fall behind early only to see the Golden Eagles put together big rally's in each to sweep Lourdes, 11-10 and 13-9. The pair of wins lift CU to 10-6 on the year and 5-1 in WHAC play. Cornerstone returns to De Witt Field on Tuesday to host UM-Dearborn at 1 p.m. in a league doubleheader.

Game One – Cornerstone 11, Lourdes 10
  • The Gray Wolves got on the board with three runs in the top of the 1st on a 2-out double that scored all three
  • CU came right back with three of their own as the first four batters reached base. RBI's by George Cutler, Daniel Freeman and Landon Poll helped CU tie the game
  • The next few innings saw much of the same as CU and Lourdes each put for more runs on the board from innings two-five to knot the score at 7-7
  • Cornerstone left 10 men on base through the middle innings as they could not break the tie
  • The Gray Wolves added single runs in the 7-8-9th innings which included a solo homerun in the 8th to take a 10-7 lead
  • After a strikeout to open the 9th inning, Eric Bradberry drew a walk and Jordan Wenzel followed with his 5th hit of the game. A strikeout put CU down to their final out but George Cutler kept the rally going with a 2-out 2RBI double to make it 10-9. JC Salinas reached on an infield single and then Landon Poll walked it off with a towering shot to right center field to score Ben Cunningham from third base and CU won 11-10.

Game Two – Cornerstone 13, Lourdes 9
  • The Gray Wolves again struck early and often as they put up three runs in the first and followed with five in the second
  • CU did threaten thanks to eight walks and one hit-by-pitch but the Golden Eagles only mustered three runs in the first two frames – all coming via bases loaded walks.
  • Cornerstone got one back in the 4th on a double by George Cutler, scoring Austin Hurt from first base
  • The sixth inning then saw CU bring across seven runs on eight hits and three walks – collecting RBI's were Austin Hurt, JC Salinas, Isaac Tayes (2), Sam Bussler and Jordan Wenzel (2)
  • The Golden Eagles extended their lead in the 7th with an Evan Shirley RBI groundout and a double steal, scoring Salinas
  • Ben Cunningham and Zach Brog came in to close out the final two frames after Dylan Vandenberg pitched very well out of the bullpen to earn the win
