GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 2-5 hitters for Cornerstone recorded 15 of the Golden Eagles 26 hits today as the team dominated UM-Dearborn with 7-4 and 14-6 victories to push their win streak to seven. Seven consecutive wins ties a program record, and pushes the Cornerstone's best record to start a season to 12-6, 7-1 WHAC. CU continues a season long eight game homestand on Friday vs. Madonna with the double-header starting at 1 p.m.
Game One – Cornerstone – 7 UM-Dearborn – 4
- After a clean first inning, the Wolverines cracked the scoreboard first off starter Chandler McKinney scoring the first run on a balk. Later in the inning Max McLennan hit an RBI single to make it 2-0.
- Cornerstone got a run back in the bottom of the second on a Grant Young sacrifice fly to score JC Salinas and make it 2-1.
- Two more RBI singles for UM-Dearborn in the top of the third gave the Wolverines their largest lead of the game at 4-1.
- Once again, the Golden Eagles found a response, with a sacrifice fly, and pair of RBI singles from George Cutler and Landon Poll to tie the game.
- CU took their first lead of the game on an Isaac Tayes hustle play, as JC Salinas scored on a fielder's choice to make it 5-4.
- Chandler McKinney settled down the rest of his outing, finishing the day with six innings pitched, seven hits, four runs, three earned runs, and three strikeouts.
- CU added two more insurance runs in the seventh, as Austin Hurt tripled to score Jordan Wenzel and George Cutler hit a sacrifice fly that later scored Hurt.
- Andrew VanDyke pitched the final three innings for CU and earned his first save of the year with two strikeouts and not allowing a hit as the Golden Eagles improved their win streak to six with the 7-4 victory.
Game Two – Cornerstone – 14 UM-Dearborn - 6
- Due to inclement weather, game two started late with an hour delay between games and a 4:30 p.m. start.
- The Wolverines got off to a strong start once the game began as the lead-off hitter Andrew Capone roped a home run down the right field line to give UMD the 1-0 lead.
- Cornerstone again answered with three hits in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a ground rule double from Landon Poll that scored Jordan Wenzel and tied the game 1-1.
- Some great defense highlighted the top of the third as Eric Bradberry picked off the runner at first and Caden Ritsema followed with a strikeout to end the inning and keep the game tied at one.
- Cornerstone erupted offensively in the bottom of the third with a pair of two RBI doubles from JC Salinas and Daniel Freeman to quickly give the Golden Eagles a 5-1 advantage.
- Grant Young continued the bottom of the third scoring with another double that scored Daniel Freeman to make it 6-1.
- UMD starter Tyler Troyer was unable to get through the bottom of the third, as he was relieved by Ian Gunderson.
- Gunderson did not fare any better, as Jordan Wenzel hit an RBI single and Austin Hurt hit a two RBI single to bring the score to 9-1.
- In the fourth, UM-Dearborn loaded the bases without recording an out. Caden Ritsema was relieved by Colin Schwartz and he was able to get out of it as UMD scored just one run to make it 9-2.
- In the fifth, the Wolverines continued to chip away at the Cornerstone lead, scoring four runs highlighted by a two RBI double from the pinch hitter Nathan Mack to bring the deficit to three at 9-6.
- In the bottom of the inning, Cornerstone found their offense again scoring a run on a Jordan Wenzel sacrifice fly.
- The inning was then highlighted by possibly the longest HR in De Witt Field history as Austin Hurt hit a two-run bomb off the batter's eye in dead center field to bring the lead to 12-6.
- After doubling in the seventh Evan Shirley doubled and later scored to add yet another CU run.
- Evan Shirley again was involved in another run with an RBI single that made it 14-6 in the bottom of the eighth.
- Brendan Miller closed out his four plus innings of work in the ninth earning his first win of the season, 14-6.
