Baseball drops a pair on Senior Day vs. Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles concluded the regular season honoring nine seniors as they fell twice at the hands of Aquinas, falling 4-2 in game one followed by a late-inning 11-10 loss in game two. Austin Hurt moved to first in CU program history with his 11th career HR as Cornerstone ends the regular season with a 18-15, 13-9 WHAC record. CU will now wait and see their fate for the WHAC Tournament as they conference will be releasing the two pods later this weekend with more information to be found on cugoldeneagles.com.

Game One – Aquinas – 4 Cornerstone – 2
  • The Aquinas three-hole hitter got the Saints on the board in the first inning, hitting a solo HR to left center to take a 1-0 edge on CU starter Chandler McKinney
  • In the third inning, Jordan Wenzel and George Cutler both made outstanding defensive plays to help McKinney to a 1-2-3 inning and keep the score 1-0.
  • Aquinas scored two more in the top of the fourth after a pair of singles to start the inning came around to score on a groundout and a single to make it 3-0.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Joshua Magley recorded the Golden Eagles first hit of the game with a double down the left field line with two outs. CU later scored as Samuel Bussler doubled on the next pitch to score Magley and bring the score to 3-1.
  • The Saints regained their three-run lead in the top of the seventh with a safety squeeze, bringing the score to 4-1.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, CU was able to score one more on a sacrifice fly to make the game 4-2.
  • Both Chandler McKinney and Travis Keys pitched a complete game, with the Aquinas starter Keys striking out 12 batters on the day to earn the 4-2 win in game one.

Game Two – Aquinas – 11 Cornerstone – 10
  • Aquinas found the board in the second inning of game two after an error and a passed ball led to Chris Suriel scoring on an RBI single to make it 1-0.
  • CU immediately responded in the bottom of the second with an RBI infield single from Samuel Bussler and an Eric Bradberry RBI single down the left field line to make it 2-1 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
  • Despite an outstanding catch from JC Salinas in right field, Aquinas scored the run back in the top of the third to tie things at two all.
  • Austin Hurt immediately got the Golden Eagles the lead back with a solo HR in the bottom of the third. This served as Hurt's 11th HR of his career to pass Jarod Burton for the CU program record.
  • Later in the inning, Joshua Magley hit a pop up to left that landed between three Aquinas defenders to score JC Salinas and make it 4-2.
  • After an Aquinas error got Caden Ritsema to second in the bottom of the fourth, he later scored on a Samuel Bussler RBI double to increase the advantage to 5-2.
  • Another error in the outfield by AQ allowed Samuel Bussler to score in the fourth and make it 6-2.
  • Both teams' bullpens settled things down, as no runs were scored in the next two innings and the score remained 6-2.
  • In the seventh, Aquinas found the scoreboard on an RBI double to cut the deficit back to just three runs.
  • Cornerstone immediately responded again in the bottom of the seventh with a two RBI single from Eric Bradberry to bring the lead to its largest at 8-3.
  • Aquinas got to the Golden Eagle bullpen in the eighth with the help of a CU error scoring three runs to cut the deficit to two at 8-6.
  • Once again Cornerstone did what they do best and responded on the offensive end as George Cutler hit a two run HR to bring the advantage back to four at 10-6.
  • Aquinas in the top of the ninth was able to load the bases, and after a hit by pitch from the new pitcher Andrew VanDyke, the Saints hit a grand slam to tie the game at 10-10.
  • After the Saints loaded the bases again, Aquinas scored another run on a groundout to take their first lead at 11-10.
  • Richard Steffan was able to secure the comeback on the mound for AQ in the bottom of the inning, 11-10.
