Baseball advances to Friday with split against UNOH and Concordia

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Cornerstone opened the double-elimination WHAC Tournament with a tough 11-5 loss vs. UNOH before taking on the host Concordia in a must win game. CU was able to hold on to win 4-2 behind the arms of Chandler McKinney and Zach Brog to survive and advance to Friday. The Golden Eagles now sit at 19-16 on the year as they will play UNOH again tomorrow at 1 p.m. regardless of the result of the Concordia and UNOH game to be played at 10 a.m.

Game One – UNOH – 11 Cornerstone – 5
  • The Racers did not waste any time getting on the board with a lead-off HR in the bottom of the first off starter Michael Foster to take a 1-0 advantage.
  • In the second inning, UNOH was able to add three more runs highlighted by an RBI double to go on top 4-0.
  • In the third, Northwestern Ohio hit two more solo HR's before Foster was relieved as the score was quickly 6-0.
  • Brendan Miller came in as relief, and was able to get out of the third without any more damage done.
  • Miller did not fare well in the fourth however as UNOH scored three more, highlighted by a two run HR to bring the lead to its largest so far at 9-0.
  • After being one hit through the first five innings, Cornerstone found the board in the sixth on a JC Salinas RBI single that brought in George Cutler to make it 9-1.
  • UNOH did not waste much time however, immediately scoring two more in the bottom of the sixth to bring the lead to a game high 10 at 11-1.
  • CU, mustered up four runs in the final three innings, highlighted by an Austin Hurt HR but it was too little too late falling 11-5 in game one.

Game Two – Cornerstone – 4 Concordia – 2
  • In game two against the host Concordia, CU was able to get a runner on in each of the first three innings but were unable to score.
  • Starter Chandler McKinney allowed just one hit through the first four innings of play as the score remained 0-0.
  • In the fifth, CU found the scoreboard as Austin Hurt singled to score the pinch runner Adam Hotovy and George Cutler hit a sacrifice fly to score Jordan Wenzel and make it 2-0.
  • McKinney continued his one hit performance through the fifth inning of play.
  • Joshua Magley added a run in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to increase the CU edge to 3-0.
  • McKinney was relieved in the seventh after running into trouble, as Concordia found the scoreboard for the first time in the inning after a groundout and error allowed two to cross and make it 3-2.
  • Cornerstone got a huge insurance run in the top of the ninth as JC Salinas singled up the middle to score the pinch runner Adam Hotovy and bring the lead back to two at 4-2.
  • Zach Brog was able to close out the final 2.2 innings of work and secure the save after a scare in the ninth, stranding Concordia runners at the corners. CU keeps their season alive and guarantees themselves a game tomorrow either against UNOH or Concordia who will play later tonight.
