GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles pulled out a pair of tough four set victories on Saturday afternoon, as they took down Saint Francis in game one and followed it up with a win vs. Ave Maria who was previously undefeated on the tournament. Cornerstone is now 3-1 in the early season as the young roster will get set to hit the road for the first time on Wednesday, August 25 as they travel to Spring Arbor for a 7 p.m. match.
Game One: Cornerstone – 3 Saint Francis – 1 (26-24, 19-25, 25-22,25-16)
- The Cougars got out to an early 11-7 edge in set one, but CU responded with a 4-0 run highlighted by a block from Kylie Barron and Olivia Keelean to tie things.
- Another 4-0 run by CU later in the set gave them the 16-12 edge.
- USF rallied back, but another big block from Kylie Barron and Olivia Keelean gave them the 26-24 set one win.
- In set two, USF took an early edge and was able to hold it throughout the set, scoring three straight points to end things at 25-19 and tie the match back up.
- Cornerstone continued to mess with their lineup bringing in Aubrey Lenz as well as rotating multiple other freshmen in set three and it led to success.
- Kaylee Dykema recorded a pair of kills in a CU 6-0 run to give them the 11-4 advantage.
- USF would start to come back, but Cornerstone held of the Cougars winning the set 25-22 on a block from Kylie Barron and Kathryn Detweiler.
- A Rylie Walters kill helped Cornerstone get out to an early 6-2 advantage in set four.
- Rylie Walters later recorded an ace to increase the lead to as large as nine at 22-13.
- Olivia Keelean recorded the match sealing kill to win set four 25-16 and improve the Golden Eagles to 2-1 on the year.
Game Two: Cornerstone – 3 Ave Maria – 1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-19)
- Cornerstone fell behind 6-1 early in set one after a trio of errors.
- After inching closer, Cornerstone once again fell behind by as many as six after a kill from Rita Campos that made it 20-14.
- CU scored six of the next seven points, capped off by a kill from Kaylee Dykema to bring the deficit back to just one.
- Ave Maria was able to hold on however with a set clinching kill from Madelyn Haut.
- AMU once again got out to an early lead in set two, forcing CU into a timeout at 11-6.
- After the timeout, Cornerstone rallied off four straight points highlighted by a pair of blocks from Kaylee Dykema.
- Rylie Walters recorded a pair of kills in a 5-0 run later in the set which would lead to a 25-19 set two win for the Golden Eagles.
- Kylie Andras was excellent at the service line in set three, helping the Golden Eagles to a 6-0 run that put them on top 18-17.
- Cornerstone scored the final three points of the set and used a Kathryn Detweiler kill to win set three 25-22.
- After the two teams traded points early in set four, CU scored four straight with kills from Olivia Keelean and Kathryn Detweiler.
- The Gyrenes were out of gas, as they tallied seven errors in the fourth set to help Cornerstone win 25-19 and secure the match 3-1. Kylie Barron recorded the final kill off the set from Aubrey Lenz to win the match.
By the Numbers
3-1 – Cornerstone and Ave Maria each came out of the CU/AQ Classic with the best record overall as they won three of their four matches.
12 – CU had 12 blocks in each match today, and
Kaylee Dykema recorded 8.5 of them.
64 – After not getting the start in the first two sets of game one, freshman
Aubrey Lenz tallied 64 total assists on the day.
29 –
Patsy Morris had the most digs in a single game for CU with 29 against Ave Maria.

Rylie Walters led the team in kills on the day with 12 in the first match and 17 in the second for a total of 29. 17 is a new career high for the junior.
