GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles broke a five-game losing skid as they split in day one of the Aquinas and Cornerstone Invite, defeating Rochester in four sets before being swept by a veteran IU-South Bend squad. Cornerstone is now 4-7 on the year, as they pick up play bright and early tomorrow morning against St. Thomas at 9 a.m. and (24) IU-Kokomo at 1 p.m.
Game One: Cornerstone – 3 Rochester – 1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-17, 25-17)
- Rochester scored four straight points all on errors from CU to take a 7-4 edge.
- CU responded with a 5-1 run that saw an ace from Olivia Keelean and a pair of kills from Kathryn Detweiler to go on top 18-14.
- Cornerstone hit a dominant .310 in the first set and earned a 25-19 win on an Aubrey Lenz service ace.
- A big block from Taylor Butkiewicz and Olivia Pannecouk highlighted the early action for Rochester to take a 7-3 edge.
- Kaylee Dykema recorded a kill to give CU the lead at 8-7.
- Emma Whitley later recorded a service ace to go on top 13-9.
- Rochester responded with an 11-1 run to take control at 20-14.
- Lauren Dejarden recorded the game winning kill to down CU 25-20 in set two.
- CU responded well in set three as a pair of service aces by Rylie Walters helped the Golden Eagles get out to a 5-1 edge.
- The connection between Patsy Morris, Aubrey Lenz, and the middles of Kathryn Detweiler and Kaylee Dykema helped the Cornerstone advantage grow to 15-6.
- Rochester crawled back into the set late, but Olivia Keelean recorded the final kill to win set three 25-17.
- A 5-0 run by CU was capped off with a great block from the freshmen Kylie Barron and Kathryn Detweiler to make it 12-8 early in set four.
- Rochester's Carly Rodman recorded back-to-back service aces to cut the CU lead to as low as one at 16-15.
- Cornerstone ended the set on a 9-2 run as Kylie Barron clinched the match with a set sealing kill to win 25-17.
Game Two: Cornerstone – 0 IU-South Bend - 3 (22-25, 17-25, 22-25)
- The two teams traded runs early, before IUSB saw their first burst with a 5-0 run, with kills from the dynamic trio of Abby Seeger, Julie Brown, and Amber Jacobs. This brought the score to 14-10 IUSB.
- Cornerstone later responded with a 5-0 run of their own that was capped off with a block from Aubrey Lenz and Kylie Barron that helped them regain the lead 18-17.
- Amber Jacobs could not be stopped at the service line for the Titans however, as she powered a 6-0 run and helped IU-South Bend take set one 25-22.
- A pair of kills from Rylie Walters helped CU get out to a 5-2 edge.
- After IUSB had taken the advantage, Olivia Keelean recorded a kill to go back on top 10-9.
- Whitney Gessinger had the outstanding serve in set two, leading a 9-0 run the longest of the day that helped IUSB take set two 25-17.
- The veteran height of IU-South Bend cost CU early in set three as they fell behind 14-7.
- Regan Vaughn entered and served for the first time in the game to help CU storm back and tie things at 14 all. Kaylee Dykema recorded a pair of kills in the run.
- The two teams traded the lead until the match was tied at 21 and the Titans took a timeout.
- After the timeout, IUSB scored four of the final five points to sweep CU and win set three 25-22.

Olivia Keelean recorded a career high 16 kills in the first match vs. Rochester. She has now surpassed 500 in her career.

Aubrey Lenz played every minute at setter and recorded 73 total assists. 45 came in the first match which is a new career high.
