Women’s Volleyball knocks off (24) IU-Kokomo to highlight day two of the AQ/CU Invite

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles ended the day on a high note, taking down (24) IU-Kokomo in four sets after losing to them in four sets just a week ago as the team once again split on the day. At the conclusion of the AQ/CU Invite, Cornerstone goes 2-2 overall after a loss earlier today in straight sets to St. Thomas out of Florida. CU is now 5-8 on the year as they open up conference play with a test at their rival Aquinas on Wednesday at 7 p.m. 

Game One: Cornerstone – 0 St. Thomas - 3 (23-25, 15-25, 29-31)
  • St. Thomas went on the first run of the match scoring four straight points to go on top 8-5.
  • Olivia Keelean crushed an over pass for the kill as CU chipped away to tie things back up at 10. 
  • Another late 3-0 run from the Bobcats helped them go on top 20-17 and force CU into their second timeout. 
  • A huge dig from Patsy Morris and kill from Kaylee Dykema capped off a 4-0 run that forced STU into a timeout with set one tied at 22. 
  • Amanda Allende recorded a kill for the Bobcats to close out set one 25-23. 
  • Cornerstone struggled with serve receive in set two falling behind 10-2 early and being forced into a timeout. 
  • The Bobcats cruised in set two to a 25-15 set two victory as their offense could not be stopped, hitting .367. 
  • Another slow start for the Golden Eagles forced them into an early timeout as they trailed 10-4. Tyran Chenault recorded a monster kill out of the middle in the run. 
  • Cornerstone showed fight in set three using a 6-0 run to regain the lead 14-13. CU saw two blocks in the run, one from Aubrey Lenz and Kaylee Dykema and the other from Lenz and Kylie Barron
  • The block continued to be dominant after the STU timeout as Kylie Barron and Olivia Keelean stuffed the Bobcats to continue the run and help CU get out to their largest lead at 20-14. 
  • After STU used their second timeout they started to regain their rhythm scoring four straight points to cut the CU lead to three at 21-18. 
  • The two teams continued to battle as the teams were tied at 25 all. 
  • The defense of both sides refused to let up as neither team could seal the set three victory until the Bobcats scored three consecutive points capped off by a service ace to win set three 31-29 and take the match in straight sets. 
 
Game Two: Cornerstone – 3 IU-Kokomo – 0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-27, )
  • Olivia Keelean scored the first two points for the Golden Eagles with a kill and service ace. 
  • IUK responded with a 3-0 run and took a 6-4 advantage. 
  • A service ace from Emma Whitley tied the first set at 9-9. 
  • CU kept it rolling with a 3-0 run highlighted by a kill from Kathryn Detweiler and ace from Aubrey Lenz to force the Cougars into a timeout leading 12-10. 
  • Cornerstone continued to battle as a big kill from Olivia Keelean forced the Cougars into their second timeout trailing 19-16. 
  • A dump from Aubrey Lenz and an attack error from IUK gave CU the set one win 25-22. 
  • Momentum continued in favor of the Golden Eagles to start set two, as a pair of big blocks from Kathryn Detweiler and Kylie Barron helped CU get out to a 6-1 edge. 
  • Olivia Keelean powered another 4-0 run for Cornerstone that forced the Cougars into their second timeout, recording three kills to make it 14-8. 
  • Cornerstone kept the pedal down in set two, using a 8-0 run to get on top 24-12. Kaylee Dykema then ended the set with a kill at 25-13. 
  • The Cougars found their offense early in set three, using a 6-0 run to go on top 11-7. 
  • An outstanding rally for the Golden Eagles ended in an IUK attack error to help spur a 5-0 run. 
  • The block for Cornerstone dominated late as back-to-back blocks that involved Kaylee Dykema forced IUK into their second and final timeout with the Golden Eagles holding a 20-17 edge. 
  • Cornerstone had four match point opportunities, but the Cougars rallied all the way back to win set three 27-25.
  • IU-Kokomo kept the momentum going into set four, as a few CU errors led to a 7-3 advantage for the Cougars. 
  • Cornerstone rallied all the way back to take their first lead at 21-20 on a block from Kaylee Dykema and Olivia Keelean.
  • CU did not relinquish the lead this time, winning set four 25-20 and the match on a Kaylee Dykema kill. The Golden Eagles earned their first win vs. an NAIA Top 25 opponent this year. 
 
By the Numbers
12 – Kathryn Detweiler recorded a career high with 12 kills in the second match victory. 
25 – Cornerstone recorded 25 blocks today, led by 13 from Olivia Keelean
31 – Patsy Morris recorded a season high 31 digs in the game two victory. 
 
What's Next?
Cornerstone opens up WHAC play on the road at rival Aquinas on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
