GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles dropped their third straight match in a tough WHAC opener vs. Madonna, falling 2-1. CU fell behind 2-0 and spent the last half hour trying to battle back, but fell a goal short dropping their record to 1-6-1 on the year and 0-1-0 in WHAC play. Cornerstone will hit the road for another tough conference contest at Aquinas on Wednesday, September 29 at 7 p.m.
The Highlights:
- The Crusaders were on the attack early, earning a penalty kick just eight minutes into the contest. Ryota Nakajima took the kick and keeper Alan Roman in his return from injury made the save to keep the game scoreless.
- In the 25th minute Madonna broke through as Issei Ito finished a ball on a sliding attack that was on its way in from the foot of Ryota Nakajima to make it 1-0.
- Jason Lugo had a nice shot late in the first half, but it was saved by the Crusaders as Cornerstone trailed 1-0 at the break.
- Madonna quickly added an insurance goal in the 49th minute, as Carlos Martinez Rodriguez scored on the nice cross from Issei Ito.
- Cornerstone immediately responded with an insurance goal off a free kick. Luke Blickley got his head to a ball and put it on net, but it was saved by the Madonna keeper. Boston Knapp was right there to follow it up however, scoring his third goal of the year to make it 2-1.
- CU was in desperation mode to find an equalizer for the final half hour as Jeff Herrema had a great chance in the 81st minute but it was blocked by the MU defense.
- Madonna was given a yellow card for time wasting in the 83rd minute.
- Cornerstone was unable to find the equalizer as they fell 2-1 on Saturday evening.
By the Numbers:
7 – Shots came at a minimum today as both teams had seven on the day.
28 – The game was very physical as each team had 14 fouls for a total of 28 on the day.

Jason Lugo was the only Golden Eagle to record multiple shots, with two and both on net.
