Women’s Basketball hangs tough but falls 69-36 at (17) Indiana Tech

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – With 7:21 to play in the third quarter, Cornerstone trailed by just four points against one of the best teams in the country, but the team was held to just nine points the remainder of the game as they fell 69-36 at (17) Indiana Tech on Wednesday evening. CU shot a season low 19.4% from the field for a season low 36 points in the loss. The Golden Eagles are now 3-15 on the year and 1-9 WHAC as they finally return home on Tuesday, January 25 vs. Concordia for a 7:30 p.m. tip. 
 
Game Flow:
  • In a low scoring first quarter, Kaycee Sluiter scored the first Golden Eagle bucket of the game just over a minute in off a pass from Emma Costen. Kennedy Helderop followed that shot up with a three ball to give CU a 5-3 lead. 
  • Indiana Tech responded with a 7-0 run to go on top 10-5. 
  • Emma Costen earned a trip to the line in the final second of the first quarter and hit both free throws as Cornerstone trailed 19-12 after one. 
  • A Warrior and-one from Emma Tuominen gave them their largest lead of the game at 10. 
  • Olivia Kubik hit back-to-back threes to power a CU 8-0 run that brought the Golden Eagles within two at 24-22. 
  • The Warriors ended the half on a 7-0 run to take a 31-22 lead into the locker room. 
  • Neither team scored in the first minute of the third, but Skylar Scholten and Kennedy Helderop each scored as part of a 5-0 run to start the period and cut the Golden Eagle deficit to four, 31-27.  
  • Cornerstone was suffocated by the Indiana Tech defense the remainder of the third quarter, scoring just one point in the final 8:32 as the Warriors went on a 15-1 run and took a 46-28 advantage. 
  • The Warriors scored the first nine points of the fourth as well, bringing their lead to 27. 
  • Cornerstone was held to just eight points in the fourth quarter as the Golden Eagles scored a season low 36 points in a 69-36 loss to the number 17 team in the country. 
 
By the numbers:
14 – The Golden Eagles were held to just 14 points in the second half, with six in the third quarter. 
14/4 – Olivia Kubik led the team with 14 points, hitting four of the team's six threes on the day. 
19.4% - Cornerstone was held to 19.4% from the field with 12 total field goals made and six of those being from behind the three-point line. 
 
What's next? 
Cornerstone returns home on Tuesday, January 22 to take on Concordia for their first game inside Mol Arena in 2022.
