11 players score as Women’s Basketball falls 72-48 in home return vs. Concordia

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Despite 11 players scoring, Cornerstone falls in their first game home in 48 days, 72-48 at the hands of Concordia. The Golden Eagles were held to 27.6% from the field as Kennedy Helderop led the team with 10-points in the loss. CU drops their seventh straight contest as they move to 3-16, 1-10 WHAC on the year. The home stretch continues vs. Siena Heights on Saturday at 1 p.m. 
 
Game Flow:
  • Cornerstone scored the first five points of the game with a three from Skylar Scholten and a layup from Kennedy Helderop
  • Concordia responded with a 10-0 run that was capped off by an Ellie Kallner three to make it 10-5. 
  • The Cardinals continued to pour it on, outscoring the Golden Eagles 21-4 the remainder of the first quarter to take a 21-9 edge. 
  • Kennedy Helderop had a strong first half, hitting a three with 6:41 to play in the second that brought them within 13. 
  • Another three from Helderop cut it to 12, but Cornerstone did not score in the final 4:25 of the first half as CUAA went on another 10-0 run to hold a 41-17 halftime lead. 
  • An and-one layup from Concordia's Julia Hirt gave them their largest lead of the game at 31. 
  • A spark from bench players Keeli Lindstrom and Kelsey Richards helped Cornerstone cut it back to 23, but a late three from Alize Tripp gave Concordia the 58-32 advantage after three quarters. 
  • Free throws from Layna Steele and a layup from Ellen Kresge gave Cornerstone the first four points of the fourth quarter. 
  • Julia Hirt continued to score for the Cardinals increasing the lead back to 30 with a three at the 4:39 mark. 
  • Cornerstone could not get the deficit under 20 as they fell 72-48. 

By the numbers:
40/20 – Cornerstone was doubled-up on points in the paint as Concordia had 40 inside and Cornerstone had 20. 
30 – Cornerstone had 30 bench points in today's game. 
6 – The freshmen Emma Costen and Stephanie Ainsworth tied for a team high six boards. 
 
What's next? 
Cornerstone will stay home as they take on Siena Heights Saturday, January 29 at 1 p.m.
