Lenz surpasses 2,000 career assists in 3-0 sweep of Madonna for Women’s Volleyball

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone keeps the steak going with their win over Madonna going 18 straight. Sophomore Aubrey Lenz surpassed her 2000th career assist in the first set, and is on her way to beat a single season program record. Cornerstone is on the road once again for their next match against UM-Dearborn at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse where they plan to keep their winning streak going. 

Game Recap: #22 Cornerstone – 3 Madonna – 0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-22) 
  • It did not take long for Aubrey Lenz to record her 2,000th career assist, doing so to spark Cornerstone in the first set as they led 10-7.
  • A block from Aubrey Lenz and Kaylee Dykema later in the set as well as a kill from Rylie Walters put CU on a 3-0 run that increased the lead to 14-8.
  • Madonna stuck around but Cornerstone continued to go on small runs as they took set one 25-13 on a Kathryn Detweiler kill. 
  • Madonna scored the first three points of set three, doing so with an ace and a block as well as a CU ball handling error from the Golden Eagles. 
  • Cornerstone responded with three straight to tie things early at three on an Olivia Keelean kill. 
  • Trailing 4-7, Cornerstone went on a 6-0 run that was dominated by the Aubrey Lenz serve to take control at 10-7. 
  • After the Crusaders tied things again at 10, Olivia Keelean served a 7-0 run that saw a pair of blocks from Rylie Walters/Kylie Barron and Kylie Barron/Kathryn Detweiler
  • Madonna would fight back to get within three points of CU, but Olivia Keelean would close the door with a kill to take set two, 25-20. 
  • MU refused to go down without a fight, scoring five straight points early in set three to go on top 9-5. Tauri Hintz recorded back-to-back service aces in the run. 
  • Another Madonna service ace forced CU to use their first timeout of the match trailing 14-9. 
  • After the timeout, Cornerstone rattled off a big run that saw an Emma Whitley service ace bringing them back within one point. 
  • A kill from Kathryn Detweiler eventually gave CU the lead 19-18. 
  • The two teams traded points down the stretch, but Cornerstone ended the set on a 3-0 run to win 25-22 on a kill from Olivia Keelean. This sealed a sweep and moved the win streak to 18 in a row. 
 
By the Numbers:
4 – Aubrey Lenz, Kaylee Dykema, and Kathryn Detweiler all had four blocks on the day as Cornerstone recorded nine total. 
37 – Aubrey Lenz ended the day with 37 assists to move past 2000 for her career.
14 – Olivia Keelean led the team with 14 kills on the day. 
 
What's Next?
Cornerstone is back on the road Wednesday as they travel to UM-Dearborn for a 7 p.m. match.
