Men’s Soccer falls at unbeaten Madonna

LIVONIA, Mich. – Receiving votes and unbeaten Madonna was too much to handle for the Golden Eagles on the road on Saturday afternoon as they fell 3-0. CU has now dropped five games in a row as they sit at 5-7-4 and 2-6-1 in WHAC play with two regular season games remaining. The final two games of the year are crucial for Cornerstone in deciding their fate headed into the conference tournament the following week. Next up for CU is a match at Rochester on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

The Highlights:
  • The Golden Eagles did a great job preventing the Crusaders from getting an early shot on net despite them holding much of the possession and earning two early corners.
  • After MU recorded the first shot high in the seventh minute, Cornerstone responded with a shot from Boston Knapp in the 10th minute that went high.
  • Madonna fouls got in the way of them creating a rhythm recording three straight.
  • Ethan Pike would make his first save in the 23rd minute on a shot from Jordy Lopez to keep the game tied 0-0.
  • Madonna broke through in the 29th minute as Ryushin Hirami found the net on an assist from Andres Gomez making it 1-0.
  • Cornerstone trailed 1-0 at the half.
  • It did not take long in the second half for Madonna to find an insurance goal, scoring in the 53rd minute to go on top 2-0 as Leonardo Abonizio beat keeper Ethan Pike
  • Cornerstone had no offensive answer against a stout Crusader defense as they did not record a shot in the first 25 minutes of the second half.
  • Madonna added one more goal in the 86th minute after a shot was blocked from Jacob Tremonti, but then he was able to get his own rebound to find the net and make it 3-0.
  • Cornerstone was given a penalty kick in the 88th minute but it was missed to keep them scoreless.
  • Madonna would just maintain possession for the final few minutes to take a 3-0 victory from the Golden Eagles.

By the Numbers:
4 – Cornerstone was held to four shots for the whole contest with three of those coming in the final five minutes of play.
5 – Cornerstone has now lost five straight matches in the WHAC.
22 – Number 22 Kyle King started on defense for the first time this season.
