GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles secured their second WHAC Regular Season Title in the last three seasons with a home sweep of Concordia on Saturday afternoon. The victory keeps CU unbeaten in WHAC play and moves their win streak to 28 in a row as they are 28-3, 19-0 WHAC on the year. Cornerstone looks to become just the second team in WHAC history to secure a perfect conference record as they will strive for that a week from today on senior night vs. UM-Dearborn starting at 1 p.m.
Game Recap: #21 Cornerstone – 3 Concordia– 0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-15)
- Cornerstone came out strong in a match with the WHAC Regular Season Title on the line, scoring the first six points on the Regan Vaughn serve with three kills from Rylie Walters.
- The service ace from June Breann helped Concordia cut the deficit to four at 11-7.
- Kathryn Detweiler and Kaylee Dykema combined for three consecutive blocks later in the first set to go on top 19-9.
- A Kylie Barron kill helped Cornerstone cruise to a 25-15 set one victory.
- In set two, Cornerstone came out the same way they did in set one, but Concordia responded much better taking a 4-3 lead and getting Regan Vaughn off the service line.
- The defense of Patsy Morris helped Cornerstone break away in set two with a 4-0 run to go on top 12-8 and force a Cardinal timeout.
- After the timeout Cornerstone scored four more points to make it an 8-0 run. Another big block from Kathryn Detweiler and Kaylee Dykema led to the second Cardinal timeout of the second set with CU leading 23-13.
- An overturned call on set point kept Concordia in it allowing them to make set two close but a tip kill from Kaylee Dykema secured set two 25-19.
- Trading points early, Cornerstone again found a small run to go up by four at 11-7. A slide kill from Kaylee Dykema forced a Concordia timeout after a few early long rallies.
- Regan Vaughn continued to dominate the service line with back-to-back aces that helped Cornerstone increase the advantage to 14-7. A block from Kaylee Dykema and Rylie Walters kept the run alive as CU cruised to a 9-0 run to go on top 17-7.
- The 2022 outright WHAC Championship was then secured on a kill from Kathryn Detweiler as CU took set three 25-15 to earn the sweep.
