GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After shooting a season low 29.2% at Northwestern Ohio on Monday, Cornerstone gets redemption against the same Racers, shooting 46.4% to earn an 81-52 home victory Saturday afternoon. CU dominated the boards out-rebounding UNOH 52-25 on the day as they improve to 18-9, 12-5 WHAC on the year. Next up for the Golden Eagles is some rescheduled action vs. Lawrence Tech on Valentine's Day with a. 7:30 p.m. tip inside Mol Arena.
What you need to know?
- Jonny Strube hit a three to open the scoring for the Golden Eagles 42 seconds into the contest.
- After Northwestern Ohio tied things at five, Cornerstone went on a three-point barrage, going on a 14-0 run that saw four threes with three of those being from Carter Nyp.
- Christian Rodriguez later hit a three to put CU up by 17, their largest lead of the game with 9:12 to play in the first half.
- The Racers responded with a 12-2 run over the next four and a half minutes that cut the CU lead to 29-22 and forced the Golden Eagles into a timeout.
- After the timeout, Drew Knickerbocker scored five straight points to put the Golden Eagles back on top by 10, 34-24 with 3:26 remaining in the first half.
- Cornerstone carried momentum into the end of the first half, as Christian Rodriguez hit two more layups to give CU a 40-26 advantage at the break.
- In the second half Jonny Strube scored eight of the Golden Eagles first nine points, hitting two threes and bringing the Cornerstone lead to its largest at 20.
- Strube continued his second half dominance with a big block on the defensive end and a dunk on the offensive end to help Cornerstone maintain a 20-point lead at 56-36 with 11 minutes to play.
- Cornerstone continued to suffocate the Racers on the defensive end and put up a highlight reel on the offensive end as Christian Rodriguez recorded a steal and went off the backboard to teammate Jack Joldersma for the monster dunk making it 64-38.
- CU was able to rotate in the bench for the final five minutes and change, and EJ Bowman and Mason Brooks highlighted the final five minutes continuing the Golden Eagles dominance on their way to an 81-52 home win.
