Offense stifled as Baseball drops season opening double-header to Mount Vernon Nazarene

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Golden Eagles struggled at the plate in their season opening double-header as they were unable to get past the MVNU starter in both games and were held scoreless in a 3-0 and 7-0 loss. Cornerstone drops to 0-2 on the year as they will have a day off tomorrow before continuing this long stretch in Florida for the Russ Matt Invitational vs. (25) Point Park on Monday starting at 11 a.m.

Game One – Mount Vernon Nazarene – 3 Cornerstone – 0
  • Both teams would go scoreless in the first inning. Mount Vernon would find two runs in the bottom of the second, scoring their first run on three straight first pitch swinging hits that brought home Pearl. The second run scored on a double-play produced by pitcher Seth Stephens as the Cougars took a 2-0 lead after two.
  • Cornerstone put up a staff day on the mound in the season opener, as Andrew VanDyke relieved Seth Stephens after two innings of work.
  • In the fifth, Mount Vernon was able to score one more, but a great defensive play from JC Salinas to Lucas Vega, all the way home to George Cutler got the final out of the inning and limited the damage to one run as MVNU led 3-0.
  • Brody Nelson exited after 1.2 innings giving up one run but leaving a runner at third. Josiah Stairs in his first appearance came in and stranded the MVNU runner at third to keep it 3-0 after six innings of play.
  • The 3-4-5 came up for Cornerstone in their final chance at bat, but the MVNU starter was able to close it out after George Cutler and Isaac Tayes singled, earning a 3-0 shutout of the Golden Eagles in the season opener.

Game Two – Mount Vernon Nazarene – 7 Cornerstone – 0
  • Caden Ritsema got the start in game two. After some early struggles throwing strikes that helped Mount Vernon get a run, Austin Hurt made a big play to get an out at home, and Ritsema got a fly out to end the inning only allowing one run.
  • The staff day continued as Alex Hayward, a freshman from Clarkston entered to pitch the second inning.
  • The Cougars were able to score two more runs in the second inning on wild pitches off of Hayward to make it 3-0. Cornerstone went back to the pen to conclude the inning as Ben Cunningham hit the mound to get the final two outs with the help of a nice caught stealing by catcher Ben Barnes
  • Ben Barnes led off the bottom of the third with a double, but CU was unable to score as Mount Vernon continued to lead 3-0.
  • After two innings of scoreless baseball, MVNU's Devin Pearl hit the first HR of the day over the right field fence to make it 4-0.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Jordan Wenzel stole two bases but a great defensive play by the Cougars again kept CU off the scoreboard to keep the game at 4-0.
  • After a strikeout reached due to an error, MVNU was able to tack on another insurance run with a single to right field to make it 5-0. The CU pitchers then started to lose a feel for the zone again, allowing Mount Vernon to score two more unearned runs, 7-0.
  • Cornerstone could not get anything going at the plate as they were held scoreless and fell 7-0.

By the Numbers:
12 – In a true staff day, Cornerstone threw 12 different pitchers over 14 innings.
22 – CU was fanned 22 times, 16 of those being in game one.
2 – Isaac Tayes was the lone player with a multi-hit game recording two.
