ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Four Golden Eagles scored in double figures as Cornerstone held off Rochester 69-67 in a tight WHAC contest. Cornerstone was up by 18 at one point in the first half before the Warriors stormed back.
Carter Nyp led CU with 15 points, while Rochester's AJ Johnson scored 21 points to lead all scorers. This victory moves the Golden Eagles to 16-8 overall, 10-4 in the WHAC.
What you need to know?
- Cornerstone started the game by going on a 10-0 run, led by four points by Jonny Strube.
- With CU up 15-4 following a Drew Knickerbocker layup, both teams combined for an almost four-minute scoring drought before Rochester broke that up with 11:34 to go in the first half.
- The Golden Eagles took their largest lead of the game, going up 18 following a Trent Summerfield layup with 8:15 left in the half.
- Rochester would dominate the remainder of the first half, going on a 22-3 run which led to a Warriors 28-27 lead heading into the break.
- Carter Nyp scored four straight CU points to help the Golden Eagles get on the board in the second half, tying up the game 31-31 with 17:42 to play.
- Both teams were going back-and-forth with scoring before Cornerstone went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a Luke Rowlinson three pointer, to take a 45-35 led with 10:56 remaining in the game.
- Rochester slowly chipped away at the CU lead for the next seven minutes before eventually tying the game on an AJ Johnson layup with 3:39 remaining.
- The Warriors then took a four-point lead before Jonny Strube was able to hit a few free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt.
- Then, with 49 seconds to play, Christian Rodriguez hit a layup to give CU a 66-65 lead.
- With five seconds to play in the game, Drew Knickerbocker hit a free throw to give Cornerstone a two-point lead.
- The Golden Eagles were able to stave off a last second RU three to pull off the victory 69-67.
