Young throws program’s first no-hitter to highlight pair of wins for Baseball

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Everything was going right for the Golden Eagles as they earned victories vs. UM-Dearborn and (8) Keiser on Wednesday. CU won their first ever game vs. a top 10 opponent in blowout fashion 16-0, as Grant Young pitched the program's first no-hitter in school history. Austin Hurt highlighted the 27-runs of offense as well, going 8-8 on the day with three HR's, a triple, three doubles, and a single. Cornerstone is now 3-5 on the year as they have a day off before taking on Judson and Roosevelt on Friday.

Game One – Cornerstone – 11 UM-Dearborn – 7
  • After two quick outs in the top of the first, Austin Hurt came up to bat and hit a solo home run to right field to put CU on the board first.
  • Two walks by starter Brendan Miller came back to haunt him, as Matt Williams later hit a bases clearing three RBI triple that gave UMD the response to go on top 3-1.
  • The home run ball continued to fly in the top of the second as Ben Barnes slapped a huge three run answer over the left field wall to put the Golden Eagles back on top 4-3.
  • Cornerstone would score six more runs in the top of the second, highlighted by their third HR of the day and second by Austin Hurt with a two-run shot. CU led 10-3 midway through two innings.
  • The Wolverines could not keep CU off the scoreboard as Austin Hurt doubled to continue his amazing day at the plate, and later scored on an RBI single from Daniel Freeman. Cornerstone led 11-3 in the third.
  • Brendan Miller recorded his first 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the third as CU started to roll on both offense and defense, continuing to lead 11-3.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Cornerstone made a pitching change after two walks and an out, as Michael Foster came in to replace Brendan Miller
  • With the bases loaded, UMD was able to add one run on an RBI single from Andrew Capone to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 11-4.
  • In the top of the fifth, Austin Hurt earned his fourth hit of the day with a triple, putting him a single away from the cycle as the score remained 11-4.
  • An RBI double from the catcher Drake Schultz helped UMD continue to chip into the lead making it 11-5 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • UM-Dearborn would add one more run in the sixth to make it 11-6, scoring one run in three consecutive innings.
  • With two outs in the top of the seventh, Austin Hurt would get a chance for the cycle needing a single to complete it. Instead of a single he recorded a double to go 5-5 on the day. CU did not score as they led 11-6 going into the final half inning.
  • Cam VanPutten came in to close out the game after UMD's Matt Williams led-off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run. Van Putten did the job as CU earned the 11-7 victory.

Game Two – Cornerstone – 16 (8) Keiser – 0
  • Trenton Gilman led off game two with a first pitch double for CU.
  • Later in the inning, Austin Hurt improved to 6-6 on the day and 1-1 in game two with an RBI single that scored Gilman and made it 1-0.
  • Cornerstone loaded the bases in the third and continued their streak of scoring each inning, as Jake Collins hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Trenton Gilman
  • Jordan Wenzel and Austin Hurt scored later in the third on a balk and wild pitch from Keiser pitchers. The Seahawks were forced to go to their third pitcher of the day in the third inning.
  • The runs continued to come in the third as JC Salinas hit an RBI double that scored Isaac Tayes and made it 6-0.
  • The Austin Hurt show continued with a two out RBI single in the top of the fourth that scored Jordan Wenzel and brought the lead to 7-0.
  • Cornerstone went right back to their scoring ways in the sixth, with an RBI single from Jordan Wenzel that scored Lucas Vega
  • Six more runs would score in the inning, highlighted by a George Cutler two RBI double ballooning the lead to 14-0.
  • Grant Young continued his dominance on the mound as well for CU, holding Keiser hitless through six innings.
  • Austin Hurt capped off his 8-8 day with a two-run bomb to left field, his third HR of the day, to move the score to 16-0.
  • Grant Young finished the seventh inning off without allowing a hit to earn the 10-run rule no-hitter for the first in program history as Cornerstone beats a top 10 team for the first time in program history, 16-0.

By the Numbers:
15 – Austin Hurt broke the single game record for total bases with 15 in game one with two HR's, a triple, and two doubles.
