GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Redshirt sophomore
Grant Young showed his dominance on the mound and at the plate today, powering Cornerstone to a pair of WHAC opening wins over Siena Heights. Young started the day on the mound and recorded a 2-0 complete game shutout, and followed that up with a two-run home run in game two as CU earned a 5-4 victory. CU improves to 10-11, 2-0 WHAC on the year as they will hit the road for conference double-headers this weekend at UM-Dearborn on Friday and Lawrence Tech on Saturday.
Game One – Cornerstone – 2 Siena Heights – 0
- Cornerstone scratched across home right away in game one, as Jordan Wenzel came around to score after he singled and stole a base on an RBI single from Isaac Tayes that made it 1-0.
- Austin Hurt made a couple great defensive plays including a diving play in the second that saved Young some pitches on the hill.
- Starting pitcher Grant Young shut down the Saints all day long as he did not give up a hit until the third inning. In the third the Saints got Parker Mabe to second with just one out but Young recorded a fly out and strikeout to keep SHU off the board.
- Both starting pitchers continued to dominate in the quickest game of the year at an hour and 33 minutes as the two pitchers kept the score 1-0 Golden Eagles through five innings.
- In the top of the sixth, Cameron Hammer stole a base after singling to get to second for just the Saints second runner in scoring position on the day.
- George Cutler led off the bottom of the sixth with a double down the left field line. SHU starter Parker Swartz got two outs after that, but Lucas Vega gave the Golden Eagles an insurance run with an RBI single to score the curtesy runner Sam Bussler.
- Grant Young returned for the seventh inning and sat Siena Heights down 1-2-3 to earn the complete game shutout and keep his ERA at 0.00 through 21.2 innings. This was Young's third consecutive complete game as he is now 3-0 on the year.
Game Two – Cornerstone – 5 Siena Heights - 4
- Dylan VandenBerg earned the start in game two for CU. After striking out the first batter, the Saints doubled and later scored a run on an RBI single from Cole VanWasshenova.
- VandenBerg recorded two flyouts to left to end the inning and keep the deficit at 1-0.
- CU immediately responded in the bottom of the first as Trenton Gilman hit a lead-off single and scored on an RBI double from the two-hole hitter Jordan Wenzel, tying the game at 1-1.
- Grant Young found his name in the headlines again in game two, but this time for his efforts at the plate as he gave CU their first lead with a two-run bomb to left field in the bottom of the second. This served as Young's second HR of his career and of this season making it 3-1.
- Dylan VandenBerg settled in after the first-inning run, holding SHU scoreless in the second and third innings with one walk and no hits on just 33 pitches for the game.
- In the fourth, Trenton Gilman made a highlight reel diving catch to end the inning and save a run as the score remained 3-1.
- Cornerstone continued to add runs in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double from Trenton Gilman and a bunt RBI single from Jordan Wenzel to make it 5-1.
- Siena Heights got a run back in the top of the sixth with a two out RBI single from Adam Wilding to center field to bring their deficit to three.
- Dylan VandenBerg's time on the mound would come to an end after 6.2 innings pitched as he was replaced by Adam Hotovy. VandenBerg struck out just two in an efficient start where he gave up just six hits.
- Siena Heights got to Hotovy in the top of the eighth with a two RBI double down the right field line that cut the CU lead to 5-4.
- Trenton Gilman again made a diving catch in right to save the CU lead and end the top of the eighth at 5-4.
- Adam Hotovy came out and pitched the ninth inning. He was able to close out the game and earn the save as Cornerstone swept the Saints on Monday afternoon.
