Baseball Tops UM-Dearborn Twice

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Golden Eagles swept another WHAC opponent, taking down UM-Dearborn. In game one, mass confusion in the first helped give way to 6-2 win. Then, in game two, the CU bats got hot in the later innings as they took an 8-4 victory. These wins move Cornerstone to 12-11 overall, 4-0 in the WHAC.

Game One – Cornerstone – 6 | UM-Dearborn – 2
  • Cornerstone got off to an early lead after confusion by the Wolverines gifted CU two runs. The UMD third baseman fielded the ball off one hop, tagged third base, then got the runner tagged out at home. However, he mistakenly thought he recorded a triple play, and all of the Wolverines left the field, which allowed Austin Hurt and Jake Collins to score. There was a 25-minute delay as the ordeal was sorted out, and CU was able to keep their runs, going up 2-0 in the top of the first.
  • The Golden Eagles would keep momentum on their side as Austin Hurt and Landon Poll each doubled, driving in a run apiece to extend the Cornerstone lead to 4-0.
  • The top of the fourth would be just as kind to CU when Austin Hurt recorded another hit, driving Lucas Vega home to grow the Golden Eagle lead to 5-0.
  • The Wolverines finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when they hit a two-run home run to cut the CU lead down to 4-2.
  • Cornerstone recorded their final insurance run when Jordan Wenzel walked which allowed Grant Young to come home and finish the scoring as the Golden Eagles won game one 6-2.

Game Two – Cornerstone – 8 | UM-Dearborn – 4
  • Cornerstone continued their offensive prowess right where they left off by scoring three runs in the top of the first. A Jake Collins single brought Austin Hurt across home plate. Then, Isaac Tayes hit a two-run shot out of the park, giving CU an early 3-0 lead.
  • UM-Dearborn would respond in the bottom of the first with a run of their own, cutting the Cornerstone lead to 3-1.
  • The bottom of the third was where the Wolverines did most of their damage on the day when a pair of singles and a Golden Eagle error allowed three runs to score, giving UMD a 4-3 lead after three innings.
  • CU responded quickly as they scored an unearned run when Trenton Gilman reached on an error and Landon Poll was able to make it home, tying up the game at 4-4.
  • The Golden Eagles regained the lead in the top of the fifth when Jake Collins hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive Austin Hurt home. Then, George Cutler hit a double that allowed Isaac Tayes to tap home plate, giving the Golden Eagles a 6-4 lead after five.
  • The eighth inning finished the scoring for the day when singles by Austin Hurt and Jake Collins drove in two final runs to give Cornerstone an 8-4 win.
