GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles battled back in each of today's contests in a blistering cold double-header vs. Indiana Tech, taking game one 5-4 and game two 9-3.
George Cutler highlighted the action with a three-run HR in game one as the Golden Eagles move to 14-11, 6-0 WHAC on the year. CU sweeps Indiana Tech for the first time in program history and will now have a week off before traveling to Madonna and Concordia over next weekend.
Game One – Cornerstone – 5 Indiana Tech – 4
- Grant Young got the start in game one for CU and after a scoreless first inning a two-run shot by Ashton Moxey of the Warriors would give him his first earned runs of the year as CU fell behind 2-0.
- Cornerstone responded with two runs to tie the game in the third as Jordan Wenzel hit an RBI single to score JC Salinas and Austin Hurt advanced on an error that scored Lucas Vega.
- Indiana Tech responded with a solo HR in the fourth by Jacob Daftari that helped them regain the lead 3-2.
- The Golden Eagles again responded as an error and a hit by pitch put two runners on for George Cutler. George Cutler then hit a three-run homerun to deep left center field that gave CU the 5-3 advantage.
- A balk scored a run in the fifth off Young and made it a one run CU lead at 5-4.
- Caden Ritsema replaced Grant Young in the sixth inning and ran into trouble loading the bases with two outs. Ritsema got a strikeout to end the inning though and keep it a one run CU lead.
- Ritsema stayed in the game for the seventh and had a much cleaner inning, taking down IIT 1-2-3 in the seventh for his first save of the year to give Cornerstone the 5-4 game one win.
Game Two – Cornerstone – 9 Indiana Tech – 3
- Nothing was easy for both starting pitchers in game two as Ryan Troxel and Dylan VandenBerg saw their pitch counts run up quickly but kept the game scoreless through two innings.
- In the second inning, one of the weirder plays of the year took place as it look like IIT would get on the board but a hit off the wall in center field resulted in two outs as the Indiana Tech runner did not move and the two Warriors collided at second base.
- Austin Hurt got his first hit of the day with an RBI single in the third inning that put CU on top 1-0.
- Errors cost CU in the fourth as Indiana Tech took the lead after a bad throw from Hurt on a double steal scored a run and an RBI single from Jayden Reed made it 2-1.
- Adam Hotovy replaced starter Dylan VandenBerg in the fifth after VandenBerg was above 80 pitches and he pitched the next 4.2 innings.
- The score remained 2-1 Warriors until the seventh when another Austin Hurt RBI single tied the game. Jordan Wenzel later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2.
- The Indiana Tech bullpen could not find the zone in the eighth inning and the defense committed two errors along with a passed ball as CU blew the game open with six runs in the inning to increase the lead to 9-2.
- As the snow started to fall, Adam Hotovy could only record two of the final three outs, giving up a run on a bases loaded walk. Ben Cunningham came in and got the final out as CU went on to win 9-3.
