AUBURNDALE, Fla. – After scoring the first run of game one Cornerstone fell 9-1. In game two the team bounced back nicely with another outstanding outing on the hill from
Grant Young with a 7-2 game two victory. CU is now 6-8 on the year and the end a three-game losing skid. The Golden Eagles are back bright and early tomorrow for two games against another Iowa opponent in Morningside starting at 9:45 a.m. at Lake Myrtle Park.
Game One – Dordt – 9 Cornerstone – 1
- Three first inning singles, including an RBI single through the left side helped Cornerstone get a first inning run and lead 1-0.
- In the bottom of the first, Dordt was able to earn a single and a walk that both later came around to score on a passed ball and sacrifice fly that made it 2-1 Defenders.
- A big error in right field and a balk allowed two more Dordt runners to score in the second inning, quickly making the lead 4-1. Starter Seth Stephens got a huge 3-0 count groundout to end the inning and limit the damage.
- Starter Seth Stephens could not get out of the third and he was relieved by Josiah Stairs. Some tough hops for the Golden Eagle defense and a rope of a double by Dordt's Holingsworth allowed them to score five more and bring the lead to 9-1. Cornerstone again had to go to the pen, as Michael Foster entered and was able to close out the third.
- Michael Foster continued in the fourth and held Dordt scoreless for the first time in the game.
- The Golden Eagles just could not find any offense as starting pitcher Diego Benitez went a complete game and only allowed four hits as Dordt earned the 9-1 game one victory.
Game Two – Cornerstone – 7 Dordt – 2
- Grant Young took the hill in game one and Dordt again scored in the first inning after an infield single and an error that would have ended the inning. Young did an outstanding job to limit the damage though and keep it 1-0.
- Trenton Gilman and Jake Collins each singled in the first and a third single from Isaac Tayes put Cornerstone on the board in the bottom of the first to tie the game 1-1.
- Cornerstone took their first lead since inning one of game one after a near ninth HR from Austin Hurt to left center. The ball went off the fence and scored Jordan Wenzel to make it 2-1 Golden Eagles.
- Grant Young started to get in rhythm on the mound, allowing just three hits three hits through four innings of work.
- Austin Hurt returned to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded. He ripped a single to left that scored Evan Shirley, but the inning would end on the same play as Trenton Gilman was out at the plate. CU increased their lead to 3-1.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Jake Collins took the first pitch out of the park with a home run to left field. Cornerstone increased their advantage to three. Later in the inning, Landon Poll scored two more with a two RBI double to left center and forced the Defenders to go back to the bullpen.
- Jake Collins again hit a HR to left in the sixth to add more insurance for CU at 7-1.
- Grant Young closed it out and got the 7-2 victory after a passed ball scored a run, for his second consecutive complete game.
By the Numbers:
3 – Dordt scored all their runs in the first three innings of both games and were held scoreless in the fourth through seventh throughout the day.
2 – With the wind blowing in,
Jake Collins hit the only two HR's for either side on the day with two bombs to left field in the fifth and sixth innings of game two.
14.2 –
Grant Young has pitched 14.2 innings so far this year and has yet to allow an earned run.
What's Next?
Cornerstone will play bright and early on Tuesday back at Lake Myrtle as they take on Morningside for a double-header starting at 9:45 a.m.
