AUBURNDALE, Fla. – After trailing by as many as five in game two, Cornerstone battled back with a huge game tying HR from
Austin Hurt and a walk-off extra inning single from
Jake Collins to take game two from Morningside 10-9 and salvage a split on the day. CU fell 6-3 in game one and they move to 7-9 on the year overall. CU has a much needed day off tomorrow before they take on Morningside again as well as IU-South Bend on Thursday for two nine-inning contests.
Game One – Morningside – 6 Cornerstone – 3
- Cornerstone wasted no time scoring bright and early in the morning. After loading the bases, Landon Poll singled up the middle to score Austin Hurt and Jake Collins.
- A couple hard hit balls by the Mustangs in the bottom of the first allowed them to tie it with an RBI double and triple making it 2-2.
- In the bottom of the second, Adam Hotovy got two outs but Morningside responded with back-to-back doubles down the left field line to score three more runs and go on top 5-2.
- Cornerstone started to chip away in the fourth as JC Salinas scored on a Lucas Vega single to center to bring the Golden Eagle deficit to two runs.
- Morningside got that run back in the bottom of the fourth as Broncado hit a missile of a home run to left field to make it 6-3.
- Cornerstone ran into some unfortunate luck to start the fifth as Jordan Wenzel was called out on a ball of the knob of the bat that stayed fair. CU saw a single later in the inning, but could not cut back into the deficit.
- Adam Hotovy capped off the grove he got in with a pair of K's in the bottom of the fifth keeping the score 6-3.
- In CU's final turn at bat the top of the lineup made it interesting as Gilman singled and Wenzel doubled to put runners on second and third with the hot Austin Hurt up to bat.
- Morningside brought in a big lefty in Jordan Kyle who was able to get out of the inning and earn the 6-3 victory for Morningside.
Game Two – Cornerstone – 10 Morningside – 9
- Brendan Miller got the start in game two and after a lead-off walk and a passed ball, a run would score on an RBI single.
- The Mustangs continued to score with RBI singles with two outs in the first, adding two more runs to make it 3-0.
- Andrew VanDyke came in and pitched the second inning. He struggled to keep runners off base as well as Morningside added another three runs on two RBI singles and groundout.
- In the bottom of the second, Cornerstone found the scoreboard on an RBI groundout from the nine-hole hitter Lucas Vega that brought the CU deficit to five at 6-1.
- Later in the inning a beneficial hop for CU helped Trenton Gilman record a two RBI single to cut the Mustang lead in half. MC was forced to go to the bullpen to get the final out of the second inning.
- Morningside picked up the run scoring in the top of the fifth with a two-run HR from Hunter Jenkins on a ball that carried to left center, bringing things to 8-3.
- MC would start to make some substitutions in the field on a hot day giving their bench players some time. Landon Poll took advantage with a two out RBI single to cut the deficit to 8-4. George Cutler later in the inning scored two runs with a single down the left field line putting CU closer than they have been all game at 8-6.
- Big Jordan Kyle entered in the sixth inning of game two after closing out game one and he had less success this time as Austin Hurt continued to be on fire at the plate with a two-run bomb that tied the game at eight.
- Cornerstone loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with two outs but was unable to score as the game went to extras. This served as the Golden Eagles first game in extra innings this season.
- Caden Ritsema continued to dominate in extras getting a quick 1-2-3 top of the eighth inning to keep things tied.
- Brody Nelson came in and pitched the top of the ninth and walked two batters to lead things off. An error allowed Morningside to then load the bases with no outs. The Mustangs were able to hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning to go on top 9-8.
- Cornerstone refused to quit though as a sacrifice fly from Trenton Gilman tied the game at nine. Later in the inning, MC chose to walk Austin Hurt to get to Jake Collins and load the bases. Collins made them pay with a walk-off single to give Cornerstone the 10-9 game two victory.
