ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Golden Eagles are set to play eight games this week with all the weather reschedules and the week got off to a bit of a rough start, falling 7-1 and 6-5 in walk-off fashion at Concordia on Monday afternoon. The losses make it four straight for CU as they move to 13-15 on the year and 5-4 in WHAC play. Cornerstone will have no time to regroup as they take on Northwestern Ohio back at home tomorrow starting at 1 p.m. for a double-header.
Game One – Concordia – 7 Cornerstone - 1
- The workhouse Adam Hotovy got the ball to start game one. After a clean first inning Concordia got to him, scoring two runs on an RBI single from Jones.
- The Cardinals scored two more runs in the third on a pair of fielder's choice plays that increased their advantage to 4-0.
- Jordan Wenzel was the only player that could find any offense for CU, recording three of the first four hits for the Golden Eagles that included an RBI double in the fifth to score Grant Young to make it 4-1.
- With the eight-game week ahead, Cornerstone stuck with starter Adam Hotovy throughout as CUAA scored three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings on a trio of RBI singles to bring their lead to 7-1.
- Trenton Gilman doubled in the seventh for CU's fifth hit of the day, but Cornerstone could not rally as they fell 7-1 in game one.
- Junior Tyson Kleinfelter pitched a complete game for Concordia with nine strikeouts and just one earned run in their win.
Game Two – Concordia – 6 Cornerstone - 5
- The Cardinals got to game two starter Brenan Miller early, scoring a run after two, two out singles, a walk, and a RBI hit by pitch in the first inning.
- Four more singles in the second scored two more for the Cardinals as Miller was only able to go 1.1 innings giving up three runs. Michael Foster relieved Miller in the second inning and earned a strikeout and flyout to end the inning as CU trailed 3-0.
- In the top of the third, the Cornerstone bats came alive for the first time on the day as Daniel Freeman led the inning off with a solo home run.
- Grant Young later doubled in the top of the third. He and Jordan Wenzel then both stole to put them in scoring position for the three-hole hitter Jake Collins who singled to right field to tie the game at three.
- Concordia would not let it stay tied for long as a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third made it 4-3.
- Aaron West led off the bottom of the fourth for CUAA with a single and then he stole second. Later in the inning, Calvin Syrjala hit an RBI double to increase the lead to 5-3.
- Michael Foster limited the damage and kept it a two-run game after four.
- The next two innings were anything but clean as both teams' bullpens struggled to throw strikes, but the pitchers were able to keep the opponent off the board as the score stayed 5-3 through six innings.
- Once again Cornerstone was able to respond in the seventh after a hit by pitch and a walk, as Austin Hurt and Isaac Tayes would each hit RBI singles to tie the game at 5-5 off the new reliever Logan Fleming.
- The duo of Ben Barnes and Ben Cunningham stifled the Concordia offense the entire second half of game two, combining for 4.1 innings pitched allowing just two hits.
- In the ninth, an error cost the Golden Eagles as Joe Jones came home to score on a Caden Ritsema wild pitch as the Cardinals took game two, 6-5.
