Big sixth inning pushes Baseball to split with (23) UNOH

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles earned their third win against an NAIA top 25 foe and handed Northwestern Ohio their first WHAC loss in a split as they won game one 6-5 and fell 10-0 in the 10 after seven rule for game two. All six runs for CU came in the sixth inning of game one to come back from a five-run deficit. Cornerstone is now 14-16 on the year and 6-5 in WHAC play as they will travel to Lawrence Tech on Thursday for a 3 p.m. double-header that was rescheduled from earlier in the year.

Game One – Cornerstone – 6 #23 UNOH – 5
  • Pitching dominated in the early going for both sides as UNOH ace Michael Joyce and CU starter Dylan VandenBerg each pitched a scoreless first three innings allowing just one hit.
  • In the fourth, Christian Perez hit an RBI single to break the scoreless tie and give the Racers a 1-0 lead.
  • Bryant Diel added to the damage with a deep three-run home run to left that ballooned the UNOH lead to 4-0 with two outs in the fourth.
  • In the bottom of the fourth Austin Hurt walked and Isaac Tayes was hit by a pitch but a double-play got out of the inning and keep the UNOH lead 4-0.
  • In the sixth, Dylan VandenBerg allowed runners on second and third with no outs. Andrew VanDyke came in as the first reliever of the day. A wild pitch scored a run but VanDyke was able to get out of the inning on an incredible catch from Trenton Gilman in right field as CU trailed 5-0.
  • Cornerstone finally got to starter Michael Joyce in the sixth to force his exit. Jake Collins then took advantage off the UNOH reliever with a two RBI double to cut into the deficit and make it 5-2.
  • UNOH subbed their pitcher again and Isaac Tayes was first pitch hunting as he hit an RBI single that scored Jake Collins and brought the Racer lead to just two.
  • The inning continued as Daniel Freeman hit a two RBI double that tied the game at five and forced another Northwestern Ohio pitching change.
  • The Racers could not get out of the bottom of the sixth, as the sixth run of the inning came around to score on a long at bat and RBI single from Grant Young that brought home pinch runner Michael Ruiz and gave CU their first lead, 6-5.
  • The fifth Northwestern Ohio pitcher of the sixth was able to get the final out after over a half hour and end the inning with the Golden Eagles holding a 6-5 lead.
  • Grant Young left shortstop and came in to pitch for the save opportunity and gave up a double but got out of the inning to give Cornerstone the 6-5 game one victory.

Game Two - #23 UNOH – 10 Cornerstone – 0
  • In game two, the Racers got on the board quickly as Yadi Rivera hit a solo home run to left to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • UNOH continued to rough up starter Brody Nelson in his first career start with an RBI single and double later in the first that increased their edge to 3-0.
  • Northwestern Ohio added another run on an RBI single from Shakur Jackson, but another great defensive play from Trenton Gilman gunned the second potential run of the inning down at the plate to keep it a 4-0 deficit after two innings.
  • Cam VanPutten came in relief in the third and had no better luck as a two RBI double scored two more to bring the UNOH lead to 6-0.
  • The Golden Eagle bullpen settled in over the next two innings as they held UNOH scoreless and kept the game at 6-0 headed into the sixth inning.
  • The first pitch from Seth Stephens in the sixth inning was hit for a home run to make it 7-0 Racers.
  • Later in the sixth three more runs scored highlighted by a two-run bomb from Tyler Grigalis to make it 10-0.
  • Cornerstone had no answer as they were unable to avoid the 10 after seven innings rule ending the game two innings early with a 10-0 loss.
