Baseball Goes Down Twice at Madonna

LIVONIA, Mich. –  It was a tough day at Illitch Ballpark as the Cornerstone dropped both games of their double header with Madonna. Both games ended in the seventh inning due to the ten-run mercy rule with Madonna taking game one 11-1, then dominating the Golden Eagles again 18-4. Not much went CU's way in this one as they only registered just five runs on ten hits with six errors in both contests. Jake Collins was the lone bright spot, hitting two home runs, one in each game. Those losses are the first two in the WHAC for CU as their overall record drops to 13-13 with a 5-2 record in WHAC play.

Game One – Madonna 11 | Cornerstone – 1
  • Madonna struck first in this contest with a single up the middle to get the scoring started taking an early 1-0 lead.
  • Cornerstone would respond in the top of the fourth when Jake Collins smacked a home run to left field to even up the score at 1-1.
  • Madonna would resume their scoring efforts in the bottom of the fifth when a pair of double and a sacrifice fly would extend their lead to 4-1.
  • Jake Collins did his best to keep the team alive, hitting a double to left center with two outs. However, the top of the sixth would end just one batter later.
  • In the sixth, the real damage was done when a few more Madonna runs forced a CU pitching change that did not stop the bleeding. The Crusaders crossed the plate seven times in the bottom of the sixth to bring their lead to 11-1.
  • After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh, the game was called due to the ten-run mercy rule with Madonna taking game one 11-1.

Game Two – Madonna 18 | Cornerstone – 4
  • Cornerstone did not want to get off on the wrong foot in game two, and they started well when Trenton Gilman hit a leadoff triple to open the game. Then, Jordan Wenzel hit a grounder that drove Gilman home to give CU an early 1-0 edge.
  • The bottom of the first was not kind to the Golden Eagles after a pair of three-run homers and a double down the left field line by Madonna gave them a 7-1 advantage.
  • Madonna continued the onslaught in the bottom of the second when they scored eight runs despite recording only one hit. A series of wild pitches, walks, hit batsmen, and costly errors by Cornerstone allowed the Crusaders to take a 15-1 lead after just two innings.
  • CU attempted to come back in the top of the third when a Jordan Wenzel hit and Austin Hurt walk put runners on first and second. Then, the hot bat of Jake Collins ripped a home run to center field, helping the Golden Eagles cut the lead to 15-4.
  • Madonna would score three more runs in the fifth and that would be the end of the scoring with the Crusaders taking an 18-4 win after the game was called in the seventh inning due to the ten-run mercy rule.

By the Numbers:
4 – RBI by Jake Collins, with three of them coming on a jack in game two.
6 – Hits by Jake Collins and JC Salinas
1 – Loss on the year for Grant Young, with his first coming in game one of today's double header.
