Collins and seniors shine in Senior Day sweep of Rochester

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – An offensive eruption highlighted Senior Day in a long double-header vs. Rochester as the Golden Eagles earned an 8-3 and 17-16 victory for a sweep. Each senior hitter hit a HR, Austin Hurt broke a program record, and Jake Collins tied multiple game records in the wins. Cornerstone is now 21-17, 13-6 WHAC as they will play their final WHAC regular season double-header next Saturday at Aquinas starting at 1 p.m. CU will also look at rescheduling the protested game at UM-Dearborn sometime this week with further updates to come on cugoldeneagles.com.

Game One – Cornerstone – 8 Rochester - 3
  • Cornerstone took advantage in the first inning of some sloppy defense from the Warriors with two errors to lead off the game. Jake Collins then scored those two runs with a two RBI single up the middle.
  • Austin Hurt then capped off the inning with a monster two-run home run that not only made it 4-0, but made him the career RBI leader at Cornerstone with his 117th and 118th of his career to pass Aaron Krupansky's program record.
  • An error by Cornerstone on a sacrifice bunt attempt allowed Rochester to get a run back in the top of the second.
  • Dominic Scalzo added another run for the Warriors on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.
  • A unique play that looked like Jordan Wenzel made the catch allowed Adam Hotovy and CU to get out of the inning. It was ruled Wenzel did not catch the ball on the play and instead they got a force out at second base. After two innings of play, Cornerstone led 4-2.
  • The starting pitchers for both sides settled in for the next two innings as neither team allowed a run or a hit to keep the score at 4-2.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Cornerstone found their offense again as Trenton Gilman doubled and Jordan Wenzel singled to put runners at the corners. Jake Collins then hit a sacrifice fly that made it 5-2 and he was followed by an Austin Hurt RBI single to bring the lead back to four at 6-2.
  • Rochester responded with back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the sixth inning but Adam Hotovy got out of the inning with a strikeout, ground out, and fly out keeping the Golden Eagle four run advantage.
  • Grant Young hit the second Cornerstone home run of the day in the bottom of the sixth to left center, a two-run shot that made it 8-2.
  • Adam Hotovy returned for the seventh inning and completed the game, allowing one more run on a ground out but secured the 8-3 game one victory.

Game Two – Cornerstone – 17 Rochester – 16
  • After a senior day celebration of seven graduating players, Rochester started game two getting two runs in the first off starter Caden Ritsema on an RBI double and a ground out.
  • Trenton Gilman responded in the bottom of the first with a lead-off home run to right field to bring CU back within one at 2-1.
  • Two batters later, Jake Collins crushed a ball as well sending one over the left center field fence to tie the game at two.
  • CU had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the first looking to take the lead but could not add any more runs as the score sat tied 2-2 after one inning of play.
  • Rochester responded right away in the top of the second adding two more runs on back-to-back RBI singles from Carter Scillion and Gabe Matti to make it 4-2.
  • Again, using the home run, Isaac Tayes tied the game in the bottom of the third with a two-run bomb to left field to make it 4-4.
  • Colton Maher chased Caden Ritsema out of the game in the top of the fourth inning with a three-run home run to put Rochester back on top 7-4.
  • Andrew VanDyke took over for Ritsema in the fourth and did not fare much better as Rochester added five more runs as CU still did not record an out to make it 12-4. Brody Nelson came in as the third pitcher of the inning.
  • A lead-off double for Grant Young came around to score on some sloppy defense in the bottom of the fourth to get one back and make it 12-5.
  • Jake Collins added a one out HR with a two-run shot to center field that cut further into the deficit at 12-7 and forced a Rochester pitching change.
  • Cornerstone continued to chip away with back-to-back doubles from Landon Poll and Grant Young to make it 12-8 and again forced a pitching change with no outs.
  • With the bases loaded, Jake Collins recorded his fourth RBI of game two with a single through the left side to cut the deficit to three. Austin Hurt hit a sacrifice fly next to bring it to 12-10.
  • Isaac Tayes hit a bloop single to right that erased the eight-run deficit and tied the game at 12.
  • In the top of the sixth, Brody Nelson walked the bases loaded before being relieved. Rochester got a two RBI single off the new reliever Ben Cunningham that regained their lead 14-12.
  • Jake Collins again had an answer with a two RBI double in the bottom of the inning that tied the game back at 14. Collins recorded his sixth RBI on the double.
  • Cornerstone took their first lead of the game on a solo home run from Landon Poll in the bottom of the seventh off the scoreboard in center field to go on top 15-14.
  • Jake Collins recorded his fifth hit and seventh RBI with a single later in the inning to increase the advantage to 16-14.
  • With the Warriors down for the first time, they found a way to respond with a two RBI single in the top of the eighth to again tie the game at 16.
  • Ben Cunningham recorded a huge scoreless top of the ninth inning on the mound. Cornerstone then loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and Landon Poll would score to win it 17-16 in a wild game two.
