GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles battled rain throughout the day and earned a split at rival Aquinas in an offensive barrage. CU won game one 14-10 and fell 9-5 in game two as they move to 22-18, 14-8 WHAC. The Golden Eagles have one regular season game remaining, a make-up protested game against UM-Dearborn to be played tomorrow. With a win and an LTU loss in their makeup game tomorrow Cornerstone would still be in line to earn the two seed with a four way tie for second headed into the WHAC Tournament. Action begins at 2 p.m. at De Witt Field.
Game One – Cornerstone – 14 Aquinas - 10
- The offense started right away for CU, as Isaac Tayes singled to score Jordan Wenzel and go on top 1-0 after one inning.
- Grant Young got four of the first five AQ batters out, but the Saints took advantage of a lack of command with two RBI walks, a single, and a double to go on top 6-1.
- Austin Hurt and JC Salinas helped Cornerstone chip away at the deficit in the top of the third, each recording RBI singles that made it 6-3. A wild pitch later in the inning scored Hurt and brought the deficit to two.
- Gillies hit an RBI double for Aquinas in the bottom of the third to make it 7-4.
- Caden Ritsema replaced Young on the hill for the Golden Eagles and had a solid next two innings as neither side scored. Cornerstone continued to trail 7-4 going into the sixth of the seven-inning game.
- With two outs, a Jordan Wenzel bunt single started a wild nine run Golden Eagle inning. Jake Collins hit a three-run home run to tie the game at seven and that was followed RBI singles from JC Salinas, Daniel Freeman, and Lucas Vega as well as a Trenton Gilman two RBI triple. CU held a 13-7 advantage with six outs to get.
- Caden Ritsema started to lose his command, walking in a run which resulted in Ben Cunningham entering the game. Cunningham allowed the two runners that were on to score on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly, but got out of the inning keeping a CU 13-10 advantage.
- In the top of the seven, Cornerstone again got base runners and added an insurance run on a George Cutler sacrifice fly.
- Ben Cunningham allowed two hits in the bottom of the seventh, but was able to close it out striking out two of three in the inning to help CU hold on to a 14-10 game one victory.
Game Two – Aquinas – 9 Cornerstone – 5
- Continuing to battle rain going into game two, Dylan VandenBerg and Aquinas starter Grant Martin each went two scoreless innings allowing two hits to keep it notched at zero.
- Dylan VandenBerg ran into trouble in the third, giving up five runs on five hits and an error in the inning. The inning was highlighted by three runs scoring on back-to-back RBI doubles from the Saints.
- Cornerstone was held without a hit in the third and fourth innings by AQ starter Grant Martin.
- After more trouble in the bottom of the fourth, Dylan VandenBerg was relieved by Andrew VanDyke. VanDyke got out of the inning but not before AQ added a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.
- In the top of the sixth, the Aquinas bullpen lost their command resulting in the Golden Eagles first run. Two walks and an error led to Jake Collins scoring an unearned run.
- Grant Young later walked in the inning with the bases loaded to bring the score to 6-2.
- Cornerstone continued to chip away bringing themselves within two in the top of the seventh with two out RBI singles from Isaac Tayes and JC Salinas.
- Landon Poll led off the top of the eighth with a lead-off home run that brought Cornerstone within one run at 6-5.
- Aquinas got insurance in the bottom of the eighth after a crucial error by CU, adding three runs on a bunt single, a wild pitch, and an RBI single to go back on top by four, 9-5.
- Isaac Tayes walked to lead-off the top of the ninth, but CU could not get anything going, falling 9-5 in game two.

15/24 – The top five Golden Eagle hitters in the lineup recorded 15 of the team's 24 hits on the day.
27 – The two teams combined for 27 walks today with 15 from AQ and 12 by CU pitchers.

What's Next?
Cornerstone closes the regular season with the conclusion of the protested game at UM-Dearborn tomorrow afternoon. The game will be played at De Witt Field with CU as the road team.
