Men’s Soccer tabs six goals in a rout of Olivet College

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – Cornerstone opened September with a splash, scoring six goals in a rout of Olivet, maintaining their shutout streak. Christian Galloway scored the first two goals, while freshman Tyler Corstange added two to go along with two assists in the 6-0 victory. The Golden Eagles are now 2-0-1 on the year, their best start to the year since 2008 as they get set to continue the stretch at Saint Xavier on Tuesday, September 6 at 8 p.m. EST.

The Highlights:
  • It did not take long for Cornerstone to get on the board as Christian Galloway sat wide open on the far side of the field and a great gross from Jeff Herrema led to an easy shot on net to put CU up 1-0.
  • Just three minutes later, nearly the exact same opportunity opened up as Galloway again was on the end of one that found the net, this time with the pass coming from Tyler Corstange to make it 2-0.
  • The freshmen Tyler Corstange then continued his attack this time finding his first collegiate goal on a pass from David Mawi that made it 3-0 under 20 minutes into the game.
  • A frustrated Comets squad received two yellow cards in the next 20 minutes for arguing with the referee and a tough challenge on the Golden Eagle players.
  • CU was not done in the first half however, as Luke Stewart scored an impressive goal knocking it in while lying on the ground. The ball was one in the air by Tyler Corstange over the keeper, leaving the net empty and Luke Stewart fought off multiple defenders to score his first goal of the year to bring the score to 4-0.
  • Chana Batan was the fourth player to score as he added the fifth goal just before half on a pass from Christian Galloway after the Olivet defense gave up on the play wanting an offsides call.
  • CU went into the half up 5-0, tying their season high for goals from 2021 in 45 minutes.
  • The Golden Eagles let off the gas pedal a little bit to start the second half, bringing in a multitude of subs, highlighted by Roberto Gutierrez seeing his first time in net playing the second half.
  • The fouls started to go Olivet's way early in the second half with four consecutive called on CU in the first seven minutes as they started to take possession.
  • A third yellow card was handed to Olivet as this time, Kyle Nowak received one for talking back to the referee.
  • Despite Olivet taking much more command in the second half, they were unable to find any offense as CU led 5-0 throughout using 11 different substitutes.
  • Tyler Corstange put the cherry on top his outstanding day, scoring a second goal in the 88th minute off a fast break pass from Jeff Herrema to give CU a 6-0 victory.
