Men’s Soccer loses first game at (14) Bethel

MISHAWAKA, Ind.  – The Golden Eagles took on their first ranked opponent of the 2022 season and it resulted in their first loss of the year, falling 3-0 to the Bethel Pilots in a Tuesday night road contest. CU trailed by just one at the half, but Bethel found a pair of insurance goals in the second half to drop Cornerstone to 3-1-3 on the year. Cornerstone is still off to a strong start and will now get set to start WHAC play on Saturday as they travel to Lourdes for a 7 p.m. match. 
 
The Highlights:
  • It did not take long for the 14th ranked Pilots to threaten on the CU net, as Luan Bressy hit the crossbar for Bethel in the third minute but it stayed out of the net. 
  • Just over a minute later, Boston Knapp recorded the Golden Eagles first shot of the game that went high. 
  • Bethel started to dominate possession for much of the first half and would find the net in the 23rd minute. Luan Bressy scored past keeper Ethan Pike to go on top 1-0. 
  • In the 39th minute, another Bethel shot hit the crossbar but stayed out to keep it 1-0. 
  • Bethel was given a yellow card in the 42nd minute as the game got more physical. 
  • Ethan Pike and the Golden Eagle defense kept the Pilots to just the one goal in the first half as they trailed 1-0 going into the break. 
  • Cornerstone had gotten off to a lot of fast second halves this season, but BU refused to let that happen scoring an insurance goal in the 50th minute off the foot of Johnson Olusegun. 
  • In the 56th minute a second yellow card was handed to Bethel, this time Eduardo Da Silva receiving it. 
  • Bethel started to run away with things, scoring a third goal from Peiro Sabroso in the 62nd minute. 
  • Luke Stewart was given the Golden Eagles first yellow card of the game in the 64th minute. 
  • With 20 minutes to go freshman Roberto Gutierrez entered the contest to play in net and closed out the game as the keeper. 
  • Jeff Herrema recorded the first shot for CU in over 20 minutes in the 77th minute but it was saved by Bethel to keep the Golden Eagles scoreless. 
  • CU would fall 3-0 on the road for their first loss of the season. 
 
By the Numbers: 
5 – Ethan Pike made five saves in the loss for CU. 
10-0 – Bethel recorded 10 corner kicks while Cornerstone had none. 
2 – Boston Knapp led the Golden Eagles with two shots.

Cornerstone opens WHAC play on Saturday at Lourdes for a 7 p.m. match.
