Madonna bests Men’s Basketball 83-65 in Livonia

LIVONIA, Mich. – In one of the tougher environments to play, Cornerstone got off to an early 11-6 advantage that would quickly evaporate with CU falling 83-65 at Madonna on Wednesday evening. The Golden Eagles could not get anything going offensively shooting a season low 38.7% to drop to 13-7, 7-5 WHAC on the year. The tough stretch continues for CU on Saturday as they travel to Lourdes for a 3 p.m. tip with another top four team in the WHAC.

Game Highlights:

First Half:
  • Cutting guards was the name of the game in the opening minutes for Cornerstone as Trent Summerfield and Luke Rowlinson recorded early buckets to give CU an 8-4 lead.
  • A leak out and one for Connor Dykema off the bench would increase the CU advantage to 11-6 going into the first media timeout.
  • After the timeout, Madonna found their rhythm going on a 15-2 run that saw a pair of threes from Henry Speight to earn their first lead 21-13.
  • Luke Rowlinson ended the run with a jumper, but the Crusaders responded with six more to bring their lead to double-figures, 27-15.
  • With 5:44 to play, Mark Mettie would hit a layup to keep Madonna on top big at 37-23.
  • Five straight Golden Eagle points that saw a pair of layups from Cory Ainsworth put the team back within nine points.
  • The two teams traded threes in the final two minutes with Carter Nyp hitting the first and only long ball of the half for Cornerstone with 1:26 to go. The Golden Eagles trailed 44-35 at the half.
Second Half:
  • Both offenses struggled to find the bucket to begin the second half. CU made one free throw for the only point from either side in the first three minutes of action.
  • Madonna would find their shot from behind the arc five minutes into the second half as Mark Mettie, Brendan Young, and Derric Murray would all hit one to spark a 9-0 Crusader run. MU led by their largest margin of 56-40 headed into the first media timeout of the second half.
  • Mason Brooks highlighted a strong mid-range game for the Golden Eagles with a fade away jumper that put CU back within 10 after a 6-0 run.
  • Madonna immediately responded with a pair of threes to go back on top 62-46 with 11:24 to play.
  • Over the next three minutes Cornerstone was again able to cut the deficit to 10 with a pair of free throws from Cory Ainsworth. Madonna refused to let them get any closer though with a layup and a timeout with 6:1 to go leading CU 66-54.
  • Cornerstone could not get anything going in the final five minutes. Madonna continued to add to their lead on their way to an 83-65 victory in Livonia.
