GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After trailing by just a point 21-20 in the second quarter, Indiana Tech ended the half on an 18-2 run to take control of the game and earn a 66-46 victory over the Golden Eagles. CU was held to a season low 46 points and shot 30.4% from the field. Cornerstone is now 11-10, 10-4 WHAC on the year as they will travel to another tough WHAC opponent on Saturday looking for redemption against Rochester at 3 p.m. EST.
Game Flow:
First Quarter:
- After an early bucket for Indiana Tech in the post, Stephanie Ainsworth recorded a big block to slow down the high-powered Warrior offense.
- Indiana Tech would suffocate CU on the offensive end and force an early Jessica Yonkers timeout with Cornerstone trailing 7-0.
- Freshman Jaxi Long got CU on the board three and a half minutes into the first quarter with a deep three.
- Cornerstone started to find their offense, taking their first lead at 10-9 with 3:51 to go in the period on a loose ball that led to an easy two for Kaycee Sluiter.
- After Indiana Tech regained the lead, Olivia Kubik hit a big three to put CU on top 15-14. Tech scored the final five points of the first quarter to hold a 19-15 advantage.
Second Quarter:
- The second quarter scoring began with a spot up three from Kennedy Helderop putting Cornerstone right back within one point of IIT.
- Stephanie Ainsworth was called for two big fouls on back-to-back possessions, making her the first to two fouls with 6:21 to play in the half.
- Indiana Tech was able to get inside and to the free throw line to spark a 10-0 run and take their first double-digit advantage, 31-20.
- Olivia Kubik ended the run with a fade away jumper, but forward Korryn Smith continued to cause problems from the three-point line, hitting her second for the Warriors to put them on top 34-22.
- Tech ended the half on an 18-2 run and held Cornerstone to seven points in the period to lead 39-22 at the half.
Third Quarter:
- Both offenses got off to an outstanding start in the third quarter, combining for a 5-8 start.
- Jaxi Long and Mackenzie Stein got some easy buckets at the hoop off some great ball movement to bring CU back within 13 at 43-30.
- For every CU bucket the Warriors had an answer, forcing a Golden Eagle timeout with just under four minutes to play in the period trailing 50-32.
- Tech's Taylor Covington hit a three at the 3:11 mark to put the Warriors on top 53-32. Kennedy Helderop responded with a three of her own on an assist from Mackenzie Stein.
- Taylor Covington again hit a big bucket at the third quarter buzzer to give IIT the 55-35 lead with 10 minutes to play.
Fourth Quarter:
- A controversial call allowed Taylor Covington three free throws early in the fourth quarter as Tech continued to extend their lead. Covington hit all three to go on top 60-38.
- With just over five minutes to play, Cornerstone continued to battle hard with Mackenzie Stein hitting an and-one bucket that she would convert.
- Cornerstone was unable to inch within 15 in the final period, as they fell 66-46 to the WHAC leader Indiana Tech.
By the numbers:
12 – Mackenzie Stein was the only Golden Eagle in double-figures, leading the team with 12 points.
8 –
Kaycee Sluiter tied her career high with eight rebounds off the bench.
9 – Neither team could get much going from behind the arc, combining for nine made threes.
What's next?
Cornerstone travels to Rochester on Saturday for a rare 3 p.m. tip, looking to redeem themselves from a double-overtime loss earlier this year.
