Offense struggles for men's soccer in the 1-0 loss to Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone traveled down the road to rival Aquinas and struggled to get anything going on offense losing 1-0. Aquinas took control of the game in the second half with a 59th minute goal and would keep Cornerstone to zero shots on goal. Roberto Gutierrez recorded six saves in the loss as Cornerstone moves to 3-7-3 (1-4-1) on the year. The Golden Eagles will continue to stay on the road as they travel to UNOH on Saturday, October 14 for a 4 p.m. kickoff.

First Half
  • The first action of the game came in the 9th minute with a shot off the Aquinas foot goes wide left.
  • Cornerstone had back-to-back opportunities in the 13th and 15th minute as shots by Seth Campbell and Calvin Curtis were off the mark.
  • Another shot from Calvin Curtis sails wide left in the 27th minute as the match has gone back and forth with shot attempts. The Match remains scoreless.
  • Roberto Gutierrez gets back-to-back saves for the Golden Eagles as Aquinas had two huge opportunities to score in the 44th minute but nothing going for them as the match heads into halftime scoreless.
Second Half
  • It was a slow start in the second half as the first action came in the 56th minute as Aquinas had a corner kick opportunity that was stopped by the defense of Cornerstone. It resulted in back-to-back shot attempts that was blocked by the Golden Eagle defenders.
  • Aquinas finally found a shot go through as in the 59th minute, Tevan Jones found the back of the net to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
  • Aquinas continued to be the aggressors as a shot by Tevan Jones was saved by Roberto Gutierrez in the 66th minute.
  • The game started to get chippy as Cornerstone and Aquinas got a yellow card in back-to-back minutes with a little over 11-minutes remaining.
  • Aquinas sent a header on goal that was once again saved by Roberto Gutierrez in the 84th minute.
  • Cornerstone had an opportunity in the 86th minute as a shot from Calvin Curtis was blocked that would result in a corner kick. Off the corner kick, the shot from Steven Stidham sails over the crossbar as Aquinas escaped a dangerous situation.
  • Aquinas would close out the match winning 1-0.
