LIMA, Ohio – The rain, wind, and cold temperatures made tough afternoon conditions in Lima, Ohio on Saturday as CU fell 5-1 to Northwestern Ohio. Cornerstone scored the first goal of the game before giving up five unanswered. The loss is the third straight for the Golden Eagles as they fall to 3-8-3, 1-5-1 WHAC on the year. The tough schedule continues Wednesday back at CU Soccer Field vs. top of the table Lawrence Tech at 7 p.m.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 1 UNOH - 5
First Half:
- Battling the weather, both sides just tried to find their footing through the first few minutes. CU did a great job of forcing turnovers in the UNOH half that led to some early possession.
- The first shot of the game came in the 13th minute. Calvin Curtis turned and found some space off a throw-in and beat the UNOH keeper to the far side, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
- UNOH recorded their first shot of the game in a 23rd minute on a penalty kick after a hand ball inside the box gave the Racers the chance. Tomas Echevarria scored for his second goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
- Less than a minute later, a turnover in the midfield led to another Tomas Echevarria goal. Diego Cerezo was able to create the turnover and send the deep ball to Echevarria on the fast break for the goal. The Racers led 2-1 in the 24thminute.
- Momentum favored UNOH the remainder of the first half, as they ended the period recording three more shots and a pair of corners. Roberto Gutierrez and the Golden Eagle back line kept the deficit at just one though with the score staying 2-1.
Second Half:
- The Racers opened the second half with a huge chance at an insurance goal. An open header Luc Maentele would not be hit cleanly though going over the crossbar in the 48th minute.
- The first caution of the game came in the 51st minute. Dani Carillo was booked for a foul.
- UNOH would find an insurance goal in the 57th minute. Liam McHugh would make a great initial slide tackle to eliminate the first threat, but the ball would land right at the feet of El Ayche for his first goal of the season. Northwestern Ohio led 3-1 going into the final half hour.
- Things started to get chippy in the 63rd minute. Both CU and UNOH would see players receive yellows as well as a talking to from the head referee.
- UNOH continued to add to their lead scoring again in the 68th minute. Diego Cerezo found the net this time to add a goal to his assist he recorded earlier in the game.
- A fifth UNOH goal was added in the 79th minute by Bjarne Renner, tying a season high against Cornerstone on the year.
- Seth Campbell was given a yellow card in the 84th minute for Cornerstone.
- Cornerstone had no response as they would fall 5-1 at Northwestern Ohio.
