Women's Volleyball Claims Straight Sets Win at UNOH

LIMA, Ohio – Cornerstone opened up its weekend road trip to Ohio and Indiana with a straight-sets win at the University of Northwestern Ohio on Friday night. The offense was clicking all night as they hit .255 in the 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 victory, improving to 12-13 on the season and 7-8 in league action. CU will head to WHAC-leading Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. first serve against the #RV Warriors.

Match Recap: Cornerstone – 3, UNOH 0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-19)
Set One:

  • CU jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead that saw Hannah Giere collect a pair of aces, forcing UNOH into a timeout.
  • The Racers ran off 11 of the next 15 points to take their first lead and the set was then back and forth until CU got three straight kills from Eliza Thelen, Kylie Barron, and Giere to go up 21-18 to cruise to the 25-19 win.
  • Cornerstone finished the set with 14 kills and just three hitting errors while hitting at a .262 clip.

Set Two:

  • CU again jumped out quickly after the side-switch as the Golden Eagles scored six of the first eight points. CU was aided by three UNOH hitting errors in that run.
  • The Golden Eagles extended their lead to as many as seven (17-10) after kills from Aubrey Lenz, Giere, and Barron and a block by Barron and Lenz.
  • Jada Thomas and Gabby VerBerkmoes collected back-to-back kills forcing UNOH into their second timeout with CU leading 22-18.
  • After CU scored the next point to make it 23-18, the Racers rattled off five straight to tie the set at 23 all.
  • CU then went up 24-23 on a UNOH error and then Barron finished off the set with a kill to win 25-23.

Set Three:

  • Cornerstone, again, started chipping away at a UNOH lead after the first series of points went back and forth and, thanks to a pair of kills from Thomas and Verberkmoes, CU led 11-7.
  • The lead remained around that 2-3 point mark until UNOH called their first timeout of the set trailing 16-13 after a block from Lenz and Barron.
  • The lead continued to grow out of the timeout thanks to an ace from Kylie Andras and an UNOH error and the lead increased to six points at 20-14.
  • The Racers used a slim run by scoring four out of five points to close the gap to within three but, out of a CU timeout, the Golden Eagles got a block, kill, and ace to up it back to six, eventually winning the final set 25-19.
