WHAC-Leading Warriors Sweep Women’s Volleyball in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The conference front runners of Indiana Tech posted a 3-0 sweep of Cornerstone on Saturday afternoon as the Warriors posted a 25-16, 26-24, 25-17 win over the Golden Eagles. CU falls to 12-14 on the season and 7-9 in league action. The Golden Eagles will return home for a 7pm matchup with Rochester on Wednesday, October 25.

Match Recap: Indiana Tech – 3, Cornerstone 0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-17)
Set One:
  • Indiana Tech scored four of the first five points of the set, but CU rallied to tie it at 5 thanks to back-to-back kills from Emmalee Murphy and Hannah Giere.
  • The Warriors used an 8-3 spurt of their own to open a 13-8 lead.
  • The lead slowly grew to nine forcing CU into a timeout and only a late kill from Gabrielle Verberkmoes kept the final tally within 10.
Set Two:
  • IT again jumped out to a fast lead in the second set as they scored the first four points.
  • CU scored seven of the next 10 to tie up the set as Eliza Thelen and Kylie Barron collected a pair of kills in the run.
  • The runs continued as each team put up three straight before IT finally separated themselves at 15-11 forcing CU into their first timeout.
  • Trailing 20-15, Cornerstone rattled off six straight to lead 21-20. Jada Thomas, Hannah Giere (two) and Thelen posted terminations in the spurt.
  • CU had set point at 24-23 but IT then scored three straight to win it 26-24.
Set Three:
  • This time it was CU that jumped out quick with a 4-0 run to open the set.
  • Indiana Tech rebounded quickly and took their first lead of the set at 10-9 and used a 5-0 run to take control.
  • The lead was never smaller than two for the remainder of the set and IT scored the final four points to win 25-17.
 
By the Numbers:
9 – Hannah Giere led CU with nine kills on the day.
12 – Emma Whitley posted 12 digs to lead her team.
.138 – After hitting over .260 on Friday night, CU struggled with 31 kills and 16 errors on 109 attempts.
 
What's Next?
The Golden Eagles will host a pair of matches next week starting with Rochester on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CU is also home Friday vs. Madonna.
