ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A win in today's game against Concordia secured the fourth seed in the WHAC Tournament and a first-round home game. It was a back-and-forth game with both sides playing hard and physical that eventually saw a big fourth quarter by the Cardinals, outscoring the Golden Eagles 31-14 as they would win 74-62. This loss tied Concordia in the loss column in the WHAC Standings with one week of regular season play left but still lead by a half game as Concordia is 11-7 in the WHAC. Freshman
Jaxi Long led all scorers with a game high 21 points. Cornerstone moves to 13-13 (12-7) on the year with their final regular season game coming on Saturday, February 18 against Lawrence Tech at 1 p.m.
Game Highlights:
- First Quarter
- It was a tough defensive battle to start the game as both teams are tied 2-2, two-minutes into the game.
- Concordia used a quick 5-0 run to get out to a 7-2 lead taking advantage of the Cornerstone turnover.
- The Cardinals continued to push the momentum as they are up 12-5 with just under six-minutes remaining.
- Cornerstone used the final five-minutes to go on a 7-2 run to close out the the first quarter down 14-12 after a nice Jaxi Long layup.
- Second Quarter
- Stephanie Ainsworth and Mackenzie Stien got things rolling in the second quarter as their points gave Cornerstone their first lead of the game, 16-14.
- Kaycee Sluiter makes the layup and gets fouled for the old fashioned three-point play to give the Golden Eagles a 19-16 lead with 6:55 remaining in the second quarter.
- A three-point play for both teams has Cornerstone leading 24-23 as fouling has been an issue for both teams in the first half.
- Another three-point play for Jaxi Long tied the game 30-30 going into halftime.
- It has been a physical first half as both teams have girls in foul trouble as this game has implications for the fourth and fifth seed in the WHAC Tournament.
- Third Quarter
- Concordia came out as the aggressors in the first two-minutes going on a 6-2 run to extend their lead 36-32.
- A three by Olivia Kubik and a layup by Kennedy Helderop gives Cornerstone the 37-36 lead with seven-minutes remaining in the third.
- Kaycee Sluiter used a nice drop step to make a lefty layup as the game is back tied 41-41 as it continued to be a back-and-forth game.
- A three-point play by Mackenzie Stien and another nice layup by Kaycee Sluiter gave Cornerstone the 46-41 lead with 1:40 remaining in the third quarter.
- Kaitlyn Cain knocks down a pair of free throws before the quarter ends to give the Golden Eagles a 48-43 lead headed into the fourth quarter.
- Fourth Quarter
- Jaxi Long likes to play against Concordia as she knocks down another floater to respond to the early Cardinal basket, 50-45 Cornerstone lead.
- Cornerstone kept pushing the momentum as they made it a 54-47 game with 7:41 remaining in the fourth.
- Concordia used a 5-0 run to make it a two-point game 54-52 with 5:40 remaining in the fourth
- Concordia outscored Cornerstone 7-4 the next minute to take the lead 59-58 taking advantage of Cornerstone's mistakes.
- The Golden Eagles have struggled to get things going as they are forcing things that have led to turnovers as Concordia would make another three to extend their lead 62-58 with 2:53 remaining in the fourth.
- Ellie Kallner drills another top of the key three for the Cardinals, but Cornerstone responds with easy layups to make it a 65-62 Concordia lead.
- Concordia would finish the game at the free throw line as they would beat Cornerstone 74-62.
