Vega highlights a split with Hastings to close out the Russ Matt Invitational for Baseball

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Lucas Vega recorded all four RBI in game one, including a three-run HR for his second in as many days as the Golden Eagles split with Hastings on their final day in Florida at the Russ Matt Invitational. CU took game one 4-1 before falling 5-4 in extras during game two as they end the season opening 18-game trip in Orlando area with a 7-11 record. Cornerstone will return to Grand Rapids for their home opener a week from today vs. Cleary as conference games are set begin.

Game One – Cornerstone – 4 Hastings – 1
  • Andrew Meny took to the lead-off spot in the Golden Eagle lineup and on the very first pitch of the bottom of the first inning singled through the left side to get an early base runner. A double play ended the inning however as the two sides sat scoreless through one inning.
  • Golden Eagle starter Grant Young would walk a pair as Hastings was able to load the bases in the top of the second. Calm and collected Young struck out a batter and got a lineout to keep the game scoreless.
  • In the bottom of the second inning, Lucas Vega would go deep again hitting a three-run bomb to left field, scoring Jordan Wenzel and Landon Poll and put CU on top 3-0.
  • Grant Young settled in on the mound for Cornerstone allowing just one hit through four innings to maintain a 3-0 lead.
  • Hastings would find the scoreboard in the fifth after two hit by pitches and then a pinch-hit RBI single from Tyler Welsh to cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • Cornerstone would get to the Bronco bullpen in the bottom of the fifth as Alec Fichter the leftie came in and got out of a one out jam to keep the Golden Eagle lead at 3-1.
  • Grant Young returned for the sixth and bounced back nicely with two ground balls and a strikeout to hold the 3-1 lead.
  • Lucas Vega would keep his good fortune going adding an insurance run with a single off the second base bag to score Jack Gagliardi and make it 4-1. Vega was able to drive in all four Golden Eagle runs in the game.
  • Grant Young came in to earn the complete game, going 1-2-3 throwing a two-hitter for his first win of the season, 4-1.

Game Two –Hastings – 5 Cornerstone – 4
  • For the first time this season Cornerstone saw the benefits of the new pitch clock rules, as Jake Collins walked to put runners on first and second after a pitch clock violation on Hastings. CU continued to threaten, forcing Hastings starter Cole Peterson to throw 44 pitches in the first, but they were unable to score leaving the bases loaded.
  • Hastings found early base runners as well getting two on in the bottom of the first. Starter Dylan VandenBerg looked like he would get out of it, but an error allowed the Broncos to score and take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Broncos would add to their lead in the third with an RBI single that was nearly out at the plate to bring the score to 2-0. Another single up the middle added two more runs as Hastings started to run away with it at 4-0.
  • With two outs in the top of the fourth, Landon Poll would get the Golden Eagles first hit since the first inning with a double into the left center field gap. CU still could not bring one home though as they would trail 4-0 going into the bottom of the inning.
  • Dylan VandenBerg's day on the mound would come to an end with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and a runner on second. Ben Cunningham was the first reliever, and he was able to get the final out to keep the deficit at four.
  • With two outs in the top of the fifth, George Cutler would get a huge double that scored a pair. Andrew Meny and JC Salinas each came in and scored to make the deficit two at 4-2. Hastings would go to the bullpen, but before the first reliever Max Smith could even throw a pitch, he was forced to exit due to blood on his hand. Hastings would then bring in Jackson Grote to pitch out of the bullpen in a 4-2 game.
  • Landon Poll stayed hot on the new reliever hitting a ground rule double to score one more run and bring Cornerstone within one, 4-3. Hastings would get the needed strikeout to end the inning leaving the bases loaded and holding the 4-3 lead.
  • In the top of the sixth, Cornerstone would score their fourth consecutive run on a sacrifice fly from Jake Collins that brought home pinch runner Grant Young, tying the game at four.
  • With the game still tied at four headed into the bottom of the seventh, Josiah Stairs would come in and pitch. He cruised right through the Hastings lineup to force extra innings at 4-4.
  • Josiah Stairs would return for a second inning of work in the eighth and would not have the same success as a bases loaded single despite a diving attempt from Matthew Kindley would give Hastings the walk-off 5-4 victory in game two.

By the Numbers:
7/2/4 – Grant Young pitched a complete game of seven innings allowing just two hits while striking out four for the win.
4/11 – Lucas Vega recorded all four RBI in game one for the Golden Eagles as he now has 11 on the year.
5-7 – Landon Poll was red hot in today's double-header going 5-8 in the two games.
