Offense comes alive as Baseball sweeps Trinity Baptist

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Golden Eagles played well-rounded baseball on Saturday afternoon going into an off day with a sweep of Trinity Baptist. The offense came alive in game one with a 9-1 victory as Dylan VandenBerg dominated on the mound. In game two, CU was able to hold a 3-2 victory behind the pitching of Grant Young and Ben Cunningham. Cornerstone moves to 3-7 on the year as they have a day off before starting week two at the Russ Matt Florida Invitational on Monday vs. Northwestern College out of Iowa.

Game One – Cornerstone – 9 Trinity Baptist - 1
  • Dylan VandenBerg bounced back nicely in the top of the first inning after giving up back-to-back singles to the first two batters. He then recorded two fly outs and a groundout to keep the game scoreless headed into CU's first chance at bat.
  • In the bottom of the inning, JC Salinas hit a lead-off double and later scored on a single through the left side from Grant Young to make it 1-0.
  • The offense continued in the first with an RBI single right over the third base bag by Jake Collins to score Grant Young and make it 2-0. TBC was able to throw Collins out on the way to second for the first out of the inning.
  • In the top of the third, Trinity Baptist was able to get a run back on a bloop single that was nearly snow coned by Grant Young to make it 2-1.
  • Cornerstone immediately responded with a run in the bottom of the third scoring on a Jake Collins sacrifice fly after Lucas Vega and JC Salinas singled and Grant Young was hit by a pitch that loaded the bases. CU led 3-1 after three innings.
  • The Golden Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth after Matthew Kindley led off the inning with a base hit. He advanced to third after a balk and single from Daniel Freeman and later scored on a wild pitch to bring the Golden Eagle lead to 4-1.
  • Dylan VandenBerg was skipping his way through the Trinity Baptist lineup in the fourth and fifth inning using a front door slider for his second K of the game to keep the Golden Eagle lead at three.
  • George Cutler added to the offense in the bottom of the fifth with a deep fly ball that bounced over the fence for a ground rule double that scored Grant Young and sent Jake Collins to third forcing Trinity Baptist to go to the bullpen with CU on top 5-1. Matthew Kindley would add to the scoring with an RBI single to score Jake Collins and bring the lead to 6-1. A pair of TBC errors prolonged the inning even further as CU would score a total of four runs to go up 8-1.
  • CU entered subs later in the game and Evan Shirley was able to add a sacrifice fly to make it 9-1.
  • Dylan VandenBerg continued to dominate, throwing a complete game with under 70 pitches on the day in the Golden Eagles 9-1 victory.

Game Two – Cornerstone – 3 Trinity Baptist – 2
  • Grant Young got the start on the mound for CU and as he usually does, he worked quickly through the TBC lineup, going 1-2-3 through the first two innings as the game remained scoreless.
  • In the top of the third, Evan Shirley battled back to earn a walk and get on base with an out in the inning. After a JC Salinas single and a Jordan Wenzel SAC bunt, Jake Collins would knock in two runs with an RBI single to give the Golden Eagles the 2-0 lead.
  • Trinity Baptist responded in the bottom of the first, executing a sacrifice bunt to get a runner in scoring position that later scored on a single up the middle to make it 2-1.
  • Lucas Vega tripled in the top of the fourth with two outs and later scored on an error from Trinity Baptist's shortstop Brandon Hoang that kept the inning alive. CU would go into the bottom of the inning with a 3-1 lead.
  • TBC's Patrick Laffery would double to lead off the bottom of the fourth and advance on a CU error. He later scored on a single to get the Eagles back within a run at 3-2.
  • Grant Young was forced to exit with runners on second and third and no outs as Ben Cunningham came in to pitch the rest of the fourth. He was helped by JC Salinas who caught a line drive and doubled off a runner at third to maintain a 3-2 lead after four.
  • Ben Cunningham would make quick work of the Trinity Baptist lineup the remainder of the game to close things out and give CU the 3-2 game two victory.
