Clutch Cutler helps Baseball salvage a split after a lightning delay at Lourdes

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Golden Eagles struggled to keep Lourdes off the board early giving up five runs in the first inning in both games of today's double-header. CU fell 12-1 in game one but after a lightning delay and an awoken George Cutler, they were able to storm back and take game two 8-7. The split moves CU to 16-23, 9-12 WHAC on the year as they end a four-game losing streak. Cornerstone's next confirmed series is at Madonna next weekend, April 21-22.

Game One – Lourdes – 12 Cornerstone - 1
  • Lourdes got off to a great start in game one shocking CU with five runs in the first inning off ace Grant Young. A run came home on an RBI single from Steve Haugh before Michael Strzelewicz hit a grand slam.
  • In the top of the second, Cornerstone saw Lourdes starter Wyatt Smith hit two batters and walk Andrew Meny for a free run. Cornerstone trailed 5-1 going into the bottom of the second.
  • Grant Young settled in on the mound, holding Lourdes scoreless in each of the next two innings to keep the deficit at 5-1.
  • The Gray Wolves were able to hit another deep fly in the bottom of the fourth, as Harrison Jackson launched a solo shot to left field to go back on top by five, 6-1.
  • Lourdes continued to add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. LU hit an RBI triple and RBI double back-to-back to score two more runs and lead 8-1. Grant Young then exited, and Drew Goodman entered to pitch. Goodman saw no better luck, as Lourdes immediately added to their lead with RBI singles from Ryan Jagodzinski and Joel Suraganan. Lourdes would go on to score a total of six runs in the inning and lead 12-1.
  • Cornerstone had no response as LU starter Wyatt Smith would throw a complete game to down the Golden Eagles 12-1 in game one.

Game Two – Cornerstone – 8 Lourdes - 7
  • Once again Lourdes got off to a great start scoring multiple runs on starter Caden Ritsema in the first inning. LU tallied five runs before an out was recorded to lead giving them a 5-0 lead after one inning just like game one.
  • Jordan Wenzel recorded the first Golden Eagle hit of the second game in the top of the third with an infield single, but CU was unable to score.
  • Cornerstone was able to find the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Landon Poll hit his first home run of the season to left field to make it 5-1.
  • Caden Ritsema used the double play to his advantage, as he would not allow another Lourdes run to cross for the next three innings.
  • With Grant Young at bat to start the top of the fifth, the game went into a lightning delay with Cornerstone still trailing 5-1.
  • The delay of just under an hour did not slow down Lourdes starting pitcher Joey Oehlers as he got out of the fifth allowing just one single.
  • In the top of the sixth, Cornerstone finally got an offensive spark. After Jake Collins doubled and Matthew Kindley walked, George Cutler hit his 10th home run of the year with a bomb to left field that cut the deficit to one at 5-4.
  • CU continued the offense against the Lourdes bullpen in the seventh, and after two walks Jake Collins hit an RBI double that tied the game at five. Cornerstone then took the lead as Matthew Kindley hit an RBI single and George Cutler hit an RBI double to make it 7-5. Lourdes would have to go to the bullpen again as Brendan Cannon could not make it through an inning of relief.
  • Lourdes responded right away against Cornerstone's first reliever in Brody Nelson. Two walks and a wild pitch allowed the Gray Wolves to get a run back on a ground out to make it 7-6.
  • LU got the tying run in the bottom of the eighth as Brody Nelson saw more trouble forcing Josiah Stairs to come in. Stairs was unable to prevent the tying run from scoring, as Ryan Jagodzinski hit the crucial RBI single that made it 7-7.
  • The back and forth continued as George Cutler refused to let Cornerstone go down with yet another RBI hit. He singled to score Jake Collins and give the Golden Eagles the advantage again at 8-7.
  • Josiah Stairs returned for the bottom of the ninth and was able to take Lourdes down 1-2-3 to secure his second win of the season as Cornerstone won game two 8-7.

By the Numbers:
3/5/10 – George Cutler recorded a 3-5 at the plate, with all three hits after the lightning delay, to record five RBI and his 10th home run of the season.
3/5/3 – Jake Collins also went three for five at the plate with three runs scored and three doubles.
16 – Walks were a struggle for both sides today as the two teams combined for 16 walks in the double-header.
