GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a 385-hour and 37-minute delay since Cornerstone and Siena Heights started their nine-inning game, they were finally able to finish it on Thursday afternoon. The game went back and forth as Cornerstone led 9-1 in the fifth. Siena Heights came all the way back to tie the game at nine with an eight run sixth inning. It was not until the bottom of the ninth that
Jake Collins hit a walk-off single to move Cornerstone to 17-23, 10-12 WHAC on the year. CU will now travel to Madonna for a 1 p.m. double-header tomorrow to begin a four-game series.
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 10 Siena Heights – 9
- The game picked up with two outs in the top of the first and a SHU runner on second base with Caden Ritsema on the mound. After walking and hitting a batter to load the bases, Ritsema got a strikeout to keep the suspended game scoreless.
- The Cornerstone offense did not keep the game scoreless for long, as Andrew Meny and Landon Poll would homer on the first two pitches thrown by SHU starter Ben Weadock.
- Weadock would give up two more singles, a hit by pitch, a three RBI triple to George Cutler, and a walk before exiting in the first inning down 5-0 without recording an out.
- Aiden Nighswander came in and settled things down, only giving up a sacrifice fly to Grant Young before getting out of the inning for the Saints. Cornerstone led 6-0 after one inning of play.
- On the mound for CU, Caden Ritsema really settled into the action over the next few innings allowing no hits and just one walk in the second and third to keep the Saints scoreless.
- Siena Heights on the other hand went to a bullpen game model after their starter could not record an out, using five pitchers through three innings. Cornerstone continued to take advantage of the SHU pitching with Ben Barnes hitting an RBI double to score Grant Young and make it 7-0 after three innings of play.
- Cornerstone hit their third home run of the day in the fourth as Jordan Wenzel hit a solo shot to left field for his third of the year. CU led 8-0 going into the fifth.
- Siena Heights finally broke through in the fifth, scoring on an RBI single from Matt Scally to bring their deficit back to seven.
- Cornerstone got the run right back in the bottom of the fifth as Jake Collins hit a sacrifice fly after three consecutive singles from Ben Barnes, Andrew Meny, and Landon Poll. The run came against SHU's sixth pitcher of the game to bring the lead to 9-1.
- The Saints continued to chip back into the game with an RBI double and a two-run home run to bring their deficit to 9-4 in the top of the sixth. Christian Burgess entered to relieve Caden Ritsema with two outs in the top of the sixth.
- Burgess saw no better luck, walking his first batter before the Saints added a two RBI single to make it 9-6. Siena Heights then capped off the inning with a three-run HR from Jacob Jackson to come all the way back and tie the game at nine.
- Lucas Vega entered to pitch, looking to get the final out. He was able to do so after SHU scored a total of eight runs in the inning to tie the game.
- Vega settled things down the remainder of the contest as neither team was able to score until the bottom of the ninth. Vega allowed just two hits in 3.1 innings pitched for the Golden Eagles.
- Jake Collins was the hero in the bottom of the ninth, hitting a walk-off RBI single to score pinch runner Ben Cunningham and help Cornerstone survive 10-9 over Siena Heights.

Cornerstone hits the road again starting tomorrow as they begin a four-game set with Madonna. The first double-header is set to start at 1 p.m. in Livonia tomorrow, pending weather.
