Baseball closes out a four-game set falling twice at Madonna

LIVONIA, Mich. – A total of 56 runs were scored across 16 innings in a double-header for Cornerstone at Madonna as the Golden Eagles fell in a pair of heartbreaking games, 15-6 and 18-17. CU drops all four in Livonia this weekend as they move to 17-27, 10-16 in WHAC play this season. Cornerstone looks to rebound in need of some wins to get back into WHAC Tournament position as they return home to face Concordia for a double-header on Tuesday, April 24 starting at 2 p.m. 

Game One Recap – Madonna – 15 Cornerstone - 6
  • Cornerstone starter Cam VanPutten struggled in the early going as the Crusaders were all over Cornerstone. Madonna would score three runs before CU could record an out in the bottom of the first inning. VanPutten responded after the three runs scored, getting a fly out and a lineout double play to end the inning. 
  • In the top of the third, Cornerstone responded with a run on Landon Poll's second hit of the day. Poll hit an RBI single to score pinch runner Jack Gagliardi making it 3-1. 
  • Madonna got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as Cam VanPutten lost the strikezone. He walked four consecutive batters that gave the Crusaders a run. Ryan McArthur entered as the first man out of the bullpen for CU with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. 
  • Ryan McArthur's first batter he faced would hit a bases clearing three RBI double to blow the MU lead wide open. The runs continued to come for Madonna, totaling seven runs in the inning to lead 10-1. 
  • Madonna continued to increase their lead in the late innings as they sat on top 15-1 going into the seventh inning. Cornerstone was able to find some sort of momentum offensively going into game two, scoring five runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a pair of RBI singles from Ben Barnes and JC Salinas. CU fell 15-6 in game one. 
 
Game Two Recap – Madonna –18 Cornerstone – 17
  • Game two was a wild one that saw runs galore. It started in the first with Andrew Meny hitting a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead. 
  • Madonna immediately responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning off starter Grant Young. CU saw three errors in the inning that allowed two unearned runs to score, giving them a 3-2 lead. 
  • Madonna added to their lead with three more runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run HR from Alex Garbacik. 
  • Trailing 6-2, Matthew Kindley hit a two RBI single in the top of the third that sliced the deficit in half. 
  • The home run ball continued as the third of the game and second by the Crusaders was hit by Kyle Revere in the bottom of the third inning to increase their lead back to four, 8-4. 
  • Cornerstone kept the insane number of runs going with their biggest inning of the game with seven runs in the top of the fourth. Jake Collins highlighted the action with a three-run home run to left center as CU regained the lead, 11-8. 
  • Neither side scored in the bottom of the fourth or top of the fifth as the score stayed 11-8 in favor of CU. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Bobby Cavin led off the inning with a solo home run to make the Madonna deficit just two. 
  • Cornerstone continued to add to their lead in the top of the sixth. This time scoring without the home run ball. Lucas Vega hit a two RBI single followed by a Ben Barnes sacrifice fly. CU led 14-9 needing just 12 outs for a win. 
  • The two teams then continued to trade runs throughout the game. Both scored a pair in the next turn at bats as Cornerstone stayed on top by five at 16-11. Josiah Stairs got the final out in the bottom of the sixth as the first reliever for the Golden Eagles. 
  • Josiah Stairs came back out for the bottom of the seventh but could not get an out forcing Ben Barnes to pitch. CU gave up five runs allowing Madonna to tie the game at 16. 
  • Madonna kept Cornerstone scoreless in the top of the eighth. They then took the lead with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth, 18-17. 
  • Cornerstone immediately responded as Matthew Kindley kept CU alive with a lead-off HR in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 17. 
  • Madonna loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth looking for the walk-off win. CU got a huge out at home to keep it tied, but a wild pitch with two outs would give the Crusaders the 18-17 game two victory. 
 
By the Numbers:
8 – In game two, the two sides combined for eight home runs with each side hitting four. 
8/9 – CU saw eight of their nine batters earn an RBI in game two with Jake Collins leading the way with a 5-6 day with four runs scored and three RBI. 
7.20 – After giving up 33 runs today, Cornerstone's team ERA has ballooned to 7.20. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone ends the regular season with six straight at home, starting with a double-header vs. Concordia on Tuesday starting at 2 p.m.
