GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Baseball hosted the top seeded Concordia Cardinals and struggled at the plate as they lost 8-1 in game one and 6-2 in game two. There was plenty of opportunities for the Golden Eagles as they left 12 men on base between both games.
JC Salinas was the bright spot in the offense where he led the way with three hits as
Jake Collins brought in two of the three runs Cornerstone scored. Cornerstone is now 17-29, 10-18 on the season before they host UM-Dearborn on Friday, April 28 for a double-header starting at 1 p.m.
Game One Highlights – Concordia – 8 Cornerstone - 1
- Lucas Vega got the start in game one and worked a quick first inning allowing a two-out walk while striking out one to keep the Cardinals off the board. Landon Poll and Jake Collins had back-to-back one-out singles, but Concordia worked around it, inducing an inning ending double play to remain scoreless after the first inning.
- JC Salinas rips a one-out triple for the Golden Eagles, but he gets stranded there as the pitching for both sides has limited the damage as the game remains scoreless after the third inning.
- After a missed opportunity by the Golden Eagles, Concordia instantly responds with a homerun to lead off the inning to take the 1-0 lead. Concordia would continue to put the pressure on the Golden Eagles, scoring two more runs to extend their lead 3-0.
- Concordia loaded the bases with no-outs as Ryan McArthur came into a bases loaded situation trying to limit the damage. He gets the first batter to pop-out in foul territory as the next batter would reach on a fielder's choice as a run would score for Concordia. He would then strikeout the final batter to limit the damage to one, as Concordia leads 4-0 after the top of the fifth.
- JC Salinas reaches on a nice swinging bunt to get the inning going for the Golden Eagles as Landon Poll would reach on a missed flyball by the right-fielder to give Cornerstone second and third with one-out. Jake Collins brought a run home with a groundout to make it 4-1 after the fifth inning.
- Concordia's first four batters reach base to start the top of the seventh as a run would score on a single to make it 5-1. After a strikeout, a perfectly executed push punt brought in a run as a wild pitch would follow to make it 7-1. A final run would score on a sac fly as Cornerstone trails 8-1 in the seventh.
- Concordia would finish game one victorious winning 8-1.
Game Two Highlights – Concordia – 6 Cornerstone - 2
- Caden Ritsema got the start in game two and worked around a leadoff walk to work a scoreless first inning for the Golden Eagles.
- Matthew Kindley got the first hit if the game for Cornerstone as he was later stranded on first as the game remains scoreless after the second inning.
- Concordia loaded the bases with two-out thanks to a couple of hits, but Ritsema worked out of the jam to keep the Cardinals off the board.
- Concordia used a two-out rally with three straight hits to get on the board scoring two-runs to break up the pitching duel after the top of the fifth. Next batter would hit a two-run homerun to put a crooked number on the board for the Cardinals to make it 4-0.
- Concordia loaded the bases with two-outs in the top of the sixth as a run would score on a hit by pitch as the Cardinals would extend their lead to 5-0. Another run would cross home-plate on a walk as Concordia is in control of this game as they lead 6-0.
- Cornerstone had something going in the bottom of the sixth as they would load the bases for Jake Collins as he would deliver with a walk to bring home the first run of the game for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone would leave the bases loaded, missing on a big opportunity to get within reach. 6-1 Concordia after the sixth inning.
- Cornerstone loads the bases again in the bottom of the seventh as Landon Poll delivers by getting hit by the pitch to score a run for the Golden Eagles to make it 6-2. A back pick by the pitcher gets the runner on second to end the inning as Jake Collins was up with the bases loaded to end the seventh inning.
- Both pitchers settled in nicely to close out the game as Concordia would win game two 6-2.
