Baseball bounces back to split with UM-Dearborn

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles earned a split with UM-Dearborn on a rainy Friday afternoon, falling in game one 7-6 on a seventh inning Wolverine home run before bouncing back to take game two 7-4. Cornerstone moves to 18-30 on the year and 11-19 WHAC play with the split. The two sides will end their seasons tomorrow back at De Witt Field for Cornerstone's senior day starting at 1 p.m. A total of 14 seniors will be honored between games tomorrow to end the year. 

Game One Recap – UM-Dearborn – 7 Cornerstone – 6
  • Some early first pitch swings from UM-Dearborn allowed them to score two runs in the top of the first off starter Dylan VandenBerg. Matthew Balash hit a two RBI single to give them a 2-0 lead before Cornerstone had a turn at bat. 
  • Cornerstone responded to load the bases in the bottom of the first inning on two walks and a hit by pitch. UM-Dearborn starter Johnny Hesterman got the strikeout to end the inning though and keep them on top 2-0. 
  • UM-Dearborn continued to pour it on in the top of the second with the help of an error, scoring three more runs to lead 5-0 and force a pitching change. Cam VanPutten was the first player out of the bullpen for the Golden Eagles. 
  • Cornerstone got on the board after Grant Young singled, stole two bases, and later scored on an error by the UMD shortstop to make it 5-1. 
  • After a five-pitch top of the third from Cam VanPutten, Cornerstone finally got the offense moving in the bottom of the inning. Matthew Kindley hit an RBI triple, Grant Young hit an RBI double, and Lucas Vega hit an RBI single to score three and bring the deficit to one. 
  • In the fourth inning, both teams were held scoreless for the first time in the game. 
  • The Wolverines found their offense again in the top of the fifth getting four consecutive singles to score a run and bring their lead back to two, 6-4. Cam VanPutten got two huge strikeouts to limit the damage and get out of the inning. 
  • Position player Nathan Mack came in from shortstop to pitch the sixth inning looking to hold the Wolverines two run lead. Mack recorded a quick first two outs before giving up a bloop double to Landon Poll. He then intentionally walked Jake Collins before unintentionally walking Andrew Meny to load the bases.  
  • Matthew Kindley was then the hero in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game at six with an infield single and a UM-Dearborn throwing error bringing home Landon Poll and Jake Collins
  • The Wolverines responded right away with a solo home run in the top of the seventh to regain the lead. Nathaniel Wandrie hit his first of the season to take a 7-6 lead. 
  • Cornerstone went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to fall 7-6 in game one. 
 
Game Two Recap –Cornerstone – 7 UM-Dearborn – 4
  • Cornerstone got off to a good start in game two as Grant Young scored on an Andrew Meny RBI double. Landon Poll looked to score on the same play, but a wild 8-6-1 putout at home would get Poll to keep the score at 1-0. 
  • Two singles and a walk from starter Ben Barnes would load the bases for the Wolverines in the top of the second with no outs. An RBI groundout would tie the game at one. A great defensive play from Barnes would get a double play to end the inning with just one run scored. 
  • UM-Dearborn scored again in the third on Matthew Balash RBI double and a fielder's choice to take a 3-1 lead. 
  • Ben Barnes recorded a four pitch fifth inning to keep the Wolverines scoreless as both offenses were held in check. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Cornerstone found their offense again tying the game. Grant Young, Landon Poll, and Matthew Kindley all tripled in the inning to score two runs and tie the game at 3-3. 
  • Grant Young led-off the bottom of the seventh with his second triple of the game to put himself in scoring position for a chance to give CU their first lead. Jake Collins crushed a ball to deep center for a double that would score Young and give Cornerstone a 4-3 lead. UM-Dearborn would go to the bullpen for the first time after the RBI double as Josh DeChane entered to pitch. Dechane had a wild pitch that scored Collins and gave the Golden Eagles an insurance run. 
  • UM-Dearborn responded for their first run since the third with an RBI double in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to one at 5-4. Ben Barnes would exit the game and leftie Josiah Stairs would enter to get the final out of the eighth inning. 
  • The Wolverines could not keep the game within one run as after two CU runners got in scoring position, they intentionally waked Jake Collins to load the bases. Andrew Meny would be hit by the very next pitch to score a run. Matthew Kindley then hit a sacrifice fly to bring the CU advantage to 7-4. 
  • Josiah Stairs ran into some trouble looking for the save in the ninth but was able to get out of it to secure the 7-4 game two victory. 

By the Numbers:
5 – Cornerstone hit five triples in today's double-header with Grant Young and Matthew Kindley each having two. 
7.2/2 – Ben Barnes ended his collegiate career on the mound with 7.2 innings of strong work allowing just two earned runs. 
5 – Grant Young tied Matthew Kindley for the team lead of five hits and scored five runs on the day.
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone will have senior day tomorrow between games of the final double-header of the year again vs. UM-Dearborn. Action begins at 1 p.m.
