GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was a tale of two halves in this match as Cornerstone and Saint Xavier tie 2-2. The first half was all defense with little to no opportunities for either side. The second half was all offense as four goals were scored with a penalty shot from both teams. The Golden Eagles now move to 1-0-2 on the season as they will now travel down the road to Calvin on Tuesday, September 5 at 7 p.m. for their next match.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 2 Saint Xavier - 2
First Half
- Cornerstone had the first opportunity of the game in the 5th minute, a shot from Dani Carrillo misses just left off a penalty from the Cougars.
- Cornerstone again had a great opportunity in the 10th minute off a Cougar penalty as the header by Liam McHugh finds the hands of the keeper.
- The defense of the Cougars and Golden Eagles have diminished any opportunity for either offense as the game remains scoreless through the first 25 minutes.
- The first corner of the game came in the 33rd minute as Cornerstone had the perfect opportunity to capitalize, but a header by Ajani Vaughn goes wide left.
- The first real opportunity for the Cougars came in the 44th minute as the shot from Sebastian Palma goes just wide of the goal.
- Cornerstone and Saint Xavier head into halftime tied 0-0 as the defense for both teams have been strong as the Golden Eagles have outshot the Cougars 3-2.
Second Half
- Right out of the gate, Saint Xavier had a great opportunity as a chip shot from Fernando Barragan in the 46th minute was saved by Roberto Gutierrez.
- After a pass from a Cougar midfielder gets through the Cornerstone defense, the shot from Fernando Barragan misses just left to keep the match scoreless in the 53rd minute.
- A hot shot off the foot of Boston Knapp was saved by the foot of the Cougar keeper but was deflected right to the foot of Tyler Corstange as he put it in the back of the net to give Cornerstone a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute.
- It didn't take long for the Cougars to respond as a beautiful touch pass from Barragan found the foot of Eduardo Ramirez who puts it in the top right corner past the keepers reach to make it a 1-1 match.
- Thanks to a foul in the box, Calvin Curtis nails his penalty kick in the lower left of the goal to give Cornerstone the lead in the 71st minute.
- Ajani Vaughn had a great opportunity to give Cornerstone a two-goal lead, but his shot went just wide left as it remained a 2-1 match in the 73rd minute.
- After a penalty in the box for the Cougars, Fernando Barragan kicks the penalty shot right down the middle to make it a 2-2 game in the 86th minute.
- Ajani Vaugh had the perfect opportunity to give Cornerstone a lead in the 89th minute but his shot sailed just high over the crossbar, keeping it a 2-2 match.
- Cornerstone and Saint Xavier would end in a 2-2 draw.
