GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After finding their rhythm again last night, the Golden Eagles found the win column on Saturday afternoon with a 25-18, 14-25, 25-20, 25-14 victory over Northwestern Ohio. The young Golden Eagles end a five-game losing skid and move to 7-9, 2-4 WHAC on the year to cap off a three match homestand. Next up, Cornerstone will travel to Rochester on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match against the Warriors who are still looking for their first conference victory.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 3 UNOH – 1 (25-18, 14-25, 25-20, 25-14)
Set One:
- Cornerstone got off to a bit of a slow start in a first set filled with runs. After scoring the first point on a Jada Thomas kill, UNOH scored five straight with two kills from Abigail Martin and an ace from Logan Thomas.
- Cornerstone responded with a 7-0 run on the Hannah Giere serve to take a big lead, 14-10. Four different Golden Eagles had a kill in the run and Giere added an ace on her great serve.
- After a UNOH timeout, Cornerstone would score four more in a row. Kylie Barron recorded three kills to make it 19-12.
- The Racers tried to battle back but it was not enough as a dump kill from Aubrey Lenz gave Cornerstone set one 25-18.
Set Two:
- Neither side could find an advantage early as kills from Jada Thomas and Hannah Giere tied things at eight in set two.
- Northwestern Ohio would then go on a 6-1 run to take the advantage and lead 14-9.
- Savanna Reed added a service ace late as it was all Racers. They led 24-13 and had CU hitting a game low .100.
- Aliyah Taylor recorded the set point kill to tie the match at one and give the Racers the set, 25-14.
Set Three:
- Cornerstone got off to the strong start in set three. Emma Whitley added a unique overpass kill early in the set to put Cornerstone on top 4-1.
- A 4-0 run later in the set put CU on top 14-9. Emma Whitley had a service ace and a big block from Kylie Barron and Emmalee Murphy highlighted the run.
- UNOH would stay in it, using a Bailey Gregory service ace to cut the deficit to two at 17-15.
- CU then responded with a 5-1 run capped off by a block from Eliza Thelen and Jada Thomas to take command, 22-16.
- Kylie Barron recorded the final kill to take set three 25-20.
Set Four:
- It was all Golden Eagles in set four. Kylie Andras added a service ace to cap an 8-3 run to start the set.
- Another Hannah Giere service run of six straight points helped Cornerstone add to their commanding lead. CU led 17-5 and saw three consecutive kills from Emmalee Murphy in the run.
- Eliza Thelen finished off the Racers with back-to-back kills as Cornerstone cruised to a 25-14 set four victory and took the match in four sets.
By the Numbers:
.391 – Cornerstone hit .391 as a team in the fourth set with a dominant 21 kills and just three errors.

Emmalee Murphy led the Golden Eagles with 15 kills making it eight straight matches she has played in with double-digit kills.
19 –
Emma Whitley tallied 19 digs for the second straight night in just her second match as the Golden Eagle libero.

Cornerstone hits the road on Wednesday to face Rochester for a 7 p.m. match.
