LIVONIA, Mich. – Cornerstone cruised to a set one victory, and led by as many as seven in set two, but a late comeback from Madonna completely shifted the momentum resulting in a four-set loss for the Golden Eagles. CU falls 25-16, 24-26, 20-25, 17-25 in a tough conference road test moving their record to 9-10, 4-5 WHAC on the year. A chance to rebound will come on Wednesday back inside Mol Arena vs. UM-Dearborn at 7 p.m.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 1 Madonna – 3 (25-16, 24-26, 20-25, 17-25)
Set One:
- Neither side could find an early advantage with no team leading by more than two through the first 20 points. Off a career high a night ago, Hannah Giere did start strong, recording three kills through those first 20 points.
- A block from Eliza Thelen and Emmalee Murphy gave the Golden Eagles their first three-point advantage at 12-9.
- A Crusader timeout allowed them to reset and cut the deficit back to one, but it did not last long as Kylie Barron and Hannah Giere tallied a block that made it 16-13.
- More great Golden Eagle offense forced the second Madonna timeout. Jada Thomas, Eliza Thelen, and Aubrey Lenz all added kills to increase the lead to 21-15.
- Cornerstone would go on to take set one 25-16 hitting .300 as a team, ending the set on a 16-7 run.
Set Two:
- Madonna got off to a stronger start in set two, taking a 5-2 advantage highlighted by a Kira Buza service ace.
- The Golden Eagles would come back and take their first lead of the set with a 6-0 run. Aubrey Lenz, who had not served all year, tallied three aces in the run to put CU on top 12-8.
- Clicking on all levels, CU continued to advance their lead. Jada Thomas recorded back-to-back kills and Alli Pickard added a service ace, as Cornerstone advanced the lead to 18-11.
- Madonna made every effort to come back and find life. They did just that going on a 9-2 run to tie set two at 23.
- The Crusaders would complete the extrodinary comeback to take set two 26-24. Errors cost Cornerstone as they had six in the final 15 points.
Set Three:
- Madonna carried the momentum into set three getting off to a hot start. MU went on a 4-0 run that saw three kills by three different players and a service ace from Karlee Stoll to lead 9-4. Cornerstone would use their first timeout.
- After the timeout, Madonna scored three more in a row that included a block and a kill from Sophia Mainhardt.
- The Crusaders increased their lead to as large as eight, 13-5.
- Cornerstone showed fight, scoring four straight points to cut the deficit to three and force a Crusader timeout. Gabrielle VerBerkmoes entered off the bench for a solo block to make it 17-14.
- Madonna errors allowed Cornerstone to get even closer at 22-20.
- MU would survive though and take set three 25-20 to lead the match 2-1.
Set Four:
- Once again Madonna found the strong start in set four. The Crusaders started the set on a 6-2 run and saw a pair of Kira Buza service aces.
- Cornerstone responded with four straight thanks to three Madonna attack errors to tie things at six.
- The runs continued, as it was Madonna's turn to score three straight. A Crusader block would put them on top 12-9.
- Madonna would continue to pour onto their lead. Back-to-back service aces from Tauri Hintz made it 16-11 and forced the first Golden Eagle timeout.
- Cornerstone had no response after the timeout. Madonna would rattle off 10 straight points and eventually take set four 25-17.
By the Numbers:
18 – The two sides combined for 18 service aces with the Golden Eagles recording eight.

Emma Whitley recorded 22 digs to lead the team as she has now recorded 20+ digs in three straight matches.

Aubrey Lenz recorded another double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs.

The Golden Eagles come home Wednesday to conclude the first half of WHAC play vs. UM-Dearborn on Wednesday, October 4 at 7 p.m.
