Women’s Volleyball tallies fourth victory in a row after facing Rochester Christian

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich.  – Women's Volleyball cruised to a four-set victory against Rochester Christian. The Golden Eagles started the match off slowly unable to finish the first set but bounced back quickly and took the next three sets in dominant fashion. Gabby VerBerkmoes led the way for the Golden Eagles with nine blocks at the net. This is the ladies fourth victory in a row, and they will look to continue their streak as they face off next against Concordia on Friday, October 18th at 7 p.m.
 
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 2 Rochester Christian – 1 (27-29, 25-11, 25-18, 25-9)

First Set: Cornerstone – 27 Rochester Christian– 29
  • Cornerstone took an early 3-1 advantage in the set thanks to a kill from Jada Thomas and block by Gabby VerBerkmoes
  • A couple points later the Warriors tied the set 3-3 with two solid kills at the net. 
  • Both teams battled early and looked to gain the edge but could not as the match stayed at 8-8 thanks to kills from Aubrey Johnson and Gabby VerBerkmoes
  • Aubrey Lenz got the Golden Eagles a three-point advantage at 11-8 thanks to some stellar sets. 
  • The set continued its competitive spirit as both teams traded points all the way up to the 25-25 point. 
  • Cornerstone took the lead twice after this point yet could not rally to win the first set as Rochester Christian took it 29-27. 
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rochester Christian – 11
  • Kylie Barron and Aubrey Johnson took some early kills in this set which gave the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead. 
  • Cornerstone began to show its dominance with a six-point run which made the set 10-2 thanks to three kills by Kylie Barron
  • Dyllan Hanna got in on the action with two kills in a three-point run for Cornerstone at 13-3.
  • Cornerstone put this set out of reach with an 18-5 advantage late in the set and ended up 25-11 which made the match 1-1 on sets. 
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rochester Christian – 18
  • Cornerstone began to build off their momentum and gained a 4-1 lead in the third set with a service ace for Emma Whitley along the way. 
  • Rochester Christian bounced back with a five-point run thanks to four attack errors by the Golden Eagles which gave the Warriors the 8-6 lead.
  • Cornerstone rallied with a four-point run with kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes and Jada Thomas to take a 11-9 lead. 
  • Another seven-point run followed for the Golden Eagles which gave them the 18-10 advantage. 
  • Aubrey Lenz placed a perfect pass to Dyllan Hanna for the kill to finish off the set 25-18. 
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rochester Christian – 9
  • Rochester Christian looked to bounce back in this set to keep the match alive as it started off steady at 3-3.
  • Cornerstone took a six-point run thanks to three kills by Kylie Barron which took the set to 8-3. 
  • Two more kills by Dyllan Hanna continued the success for the Golden Eagles as they led 14-5. 
  • Aubrey Lenz put another service ace on the Warriors as Cornerstone went on a four-point run at 18-6. 
  • Cornerstone finished off Rochester Christian at 25-9 thanks to a solid offensive performance. 
By the Numbers:
10 – Aubrey Johnson tallied her 10th straight double-double with 22 kills and 10 digs.
4 – The Golden Eagles have won their last four matches. 
9 – Gabby VerBerkmoes continued her dominant form at the net with nine blocks.
51 – Aubrey Lenz led the match with 51 assists.

Women's Volleyball will return back home for a matchup against Concordia on Friday, October 18th at 7 p.m.
