SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Women's Volleyball traveled to the WHAC second ranked Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech and fell short, losing a five-set heartbreaker 3-2. The loss moves Cornerstone to 0-4 in five set matches and an overall record of 10-7 (4-4).
Kylie Barron led the way for the Golden Eagles with a 16 kill, five block performance with
Aubrey Lenz adding 42 assists and 12 digs in the loss. Women's Volleyball remains on the road as they travel to Fort Wayne to take on the reigning national champions #8 Indiana Wesleyan on Friday, October 4 starting at 5 p.m.
Game Recap: Lawrence Tech – 3 Cornerstone – 2 (25-18, 17-25, 20-25, 25-15, 12-15)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech – 18
- It started out in favor of Lawrence Tech as they have jumped out to a 5-1 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- The Golden Eagles responded nicely with a 4-0 run to tie it at five after a kill from Emmalee Murphy.
- The run continued for Cornerstone as they led 9-7 after back-to-back service aces from Aubrey Lenz.
- Cornerstone and Lawrence Tech traded points as the first set is now tied 13-13.
- A 6-2 Golden Eagle run forced Lawrence Tech into a timeout after a service ace from Alli Pickard and a kill from Emmalee Murphy.
- It continued to be all Cornerstone late in the first set as a kill from Aubrey Johnson and Kylie Barron made it 22-17.
- Aubrey Johnson put the final touch on the first set as the Golden Eagles take it 25-18.
Second Set: Lawrence Tech – 25 Cornerstone – 17
- Cornerstone jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set thanks to a few errors from the Blue Devils and a kill from Aubrey Johnson.
- Lawrence Tech rattled off six-straight points to take an 8-7 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- The run continued for Lawrence Tech as Cornerstone was forced to use their first timeout as they have extended their lead 13-8.
- Cornerstone had to use their final timeout as Lawrence Tech continued to add onto their lead as it is now 17-9.
- The Golden Eagles have found some late life as back-to-back blocks from Gabby VerBerkmoes made it 24-17.
- Lawrence Tech takes the second set 25-17.
Third Set: Lawrence Tech – 25 Cornerstone 20
- A service ace from Aubrey Lenz tied the third set early at three.
- A 6-1 run by Lawrence Tech saw them take a big 9-4 lead over the Golden Eagles as the Blue Devils had four kills in the run.
- Cornerstone was forced to use their first timeout of the set as the Blue Devils continued to lead 14-9.
- It continued to be all Lawrence Tech in the third set as they remain ahead 19-13.
- A 6-2 run by the Golden Eagles closes the gap as Kylie Barron had two kills and a block in the run.
- Lawrence Tech would close out the third set on a 5-2 run to take it 25-20.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Lawrence Tech – 15
- The Golden Eagles started the fourth set with a nice 6-2 run thanks in part to four Lawrence Tech attack errors.
- Three kills in a row by Aubrey Johnson, Kylie Barron, and Jada Thomas forced Lawrence Tech into a timeout as they lead 9-5.
- A 6-1 run made Lawrence Tech use their final timeout of the fourth set as the Golden Eagles lead 16-9. Aubrey Johnson, Kylie Barron, and Gabby VerBerkmoes all had kills in the run.
- A kill and service ace from Aubrey Lenz made it 20-10 Golden Eagles late in the fourth set.
- Cornerstone forced a fifth set with a fourth set 25-15 victory as Kylie Barron had the final kill in the frame.
Fifth Set: Lawrence Tech – 15 Cornerstone – 12
- A kill from Gabby VerBerkmoes and an attack error by the Blue Devils gave Cornerstone and early 2-1 advantage.
- The points continued to be traded in the fifth set as a kill from Aubrey Johnson made it a 6-5 Golden Eagle lead.
- Lawrence Tech used a 3-1 run to take an 8-7 lead at the halfway switch in the fifth set.
- Cornerstone used a 3-0 run to take an 11-9 lead thanks to a kill from Emmalee Murphy, a service ace from Alli Pickard, and a block from Aubrey Johnson and Gabby VerBerkmoes.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes sends one down as the Golden Eagles are three points away from a fifth set victory. They lead 12-10.
- Cornerstone was forced into a timeout as Lawrence Tech tied the fifth set at 12.
- Lawrence used another 2-0 run out of the timeout to take a 14-12 lead as the Golden Eagles use a final timeout to regroup.
- Out of the timeout, Lawrence Tech gets a service ace to take the fifth set 15-12 thanks to a final 5-0 run.
