FORT WAYNE, Ind. – To open a tough weekend of matches, women's volleyball faced off against reigning national champions Indiana Wesleyan, taking them to five sets but falling in the final frame to lose 3-2. It was an impressive match all around for the Golden Eagles as they held the attack of the Wildcats to just .222 and out blocked them 16-7.
Aubrey Johnson continued to improve with a 19 kill, 16 dig performance to lead the way for the Golden Eagles. Cornerstone has now fallen in back-to-back five set matches as the loss moves them to 10-8 on the year. Women's Volleyball will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon with matches against #RV Lindsey Wilson and #14 Grace at 12 and 2 p.m.
Game Recap: #9 Indiana Wesleyan – 3 Cornerstone – 2 (25-20, 26-28, 20-25, 25-17, 10-15)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 #9 Indiana Wesleyan – 23
- Indiana Wesleyan jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after a few Golden Eagles errors.
- Aubrey Johnson ties the first set at five thanks to a service ace.
- Cornerstone used a 6-0 run to take a 12-8 lead over the Wildcats that forced them to a call a timeout. Aubrey Lenz added a service ace and Aubrey Johnson added a kill in the run.
- The Golden Eagles continued to add to their lead as another Cornerstone service ace, this one from Ava Ford made it 15-10.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes ends the small Indiana Wesleyan run with a kill as it is 18-16 Cornerstone late in the first set.
- Back-to-back attack errors by the Wildcats sees the Golden Eagles one point away from a set one victory.
- Cornerstone was forced to a call a timeout as the Wildcats made it 24-23 late.
- Out of the timeout, the Golden Eagles get the final point thanks to a block to take set one 25-23.
Second Set: #9 Indiana Wesleyan – 28 Cornerstone – 26
- Cornerstone and Indiana Wesleyan traded points to open the second set as a kill from Kylie Barron tied it 4-4.
- The Wildcats used a quick 4-1 run to take an 8-5 advantage over the Golden Eagles.
- A kill from Aubrey Johnson made it a one-point set as the Wildcats continued to lead 10-9.
- Cornerstone was forced to call a timeout as Indiana Wesleyan extended their lead 16-12 halfway through the second set.
- Out of the timeout, the Golden Eagles used a 3-0 run thanks to kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes and Emmalee Murphy with an Aubrey Lenz service ace that forced the Wildcats into a timeout.
- The run continued for Cornerstone, as they have now taken a 20-17 lead over the Wildcats thanks to kills from Aubrey Lenz, Jada Thomas, and Aubrey Johnson.
- After an attack error from the Wildcats, the Golden Eagles find themselves ahead 22-19 late in the second set.
- A kill from Kylie Barron makes it a 24-20 Cornerstone advantage as they are one point away from a 2-0 lead.
- Four straight kills from the Wildcats ties the match at 24-24 as the set heads into extra points.
- A kill from Kylie Barron and an attack error by the Wildcats gave Cornerstone a 26-25 lead.
- The Wildcats come from behind to take the second set 28-26 thanks to a kill and a service ace.
Third Set: #9 Indiana Wesleyan – 25 Cornerstone – 20
- Indiana Wesleyan opened the third set hot with a 5-1 run thanks to three kills and a service ace.
- A nice Golden Eagle run closes the gap as it is now 6-5 after a block from Kylie Barron and Aubrey Lenz as Jada Thomas added a kill.
- The third set remained close as a kill from Emmalee Murphy and an error from the Wildcats made it 9-8.
- A long run by the Wildcats sees them take a nice 17-9 lead over the Golden Eagles.
- It continued to be all Indiana Wesleyan in the third set as they now lead 20-12.
- The Golden Eagles continued to chip away and stick around as the set is now 23-16 after a kill from Kylie Barron.
- Back-to-back blocks from Gabby VerBerkmoes makes it 24-20 late in the fourth set.
- Indiana Wesleyan closes out the third set with a kill as they take it 25-20 and the match lead 2-1.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 #9 Indiana Wesleyan - 17
Fifth Set: #9 Indiana Wesleyan – 15 Cornerstone – 10
- Indiana Wesleyan jumped out to an early 4-0 lead to open the final frame as the Golden Eagles were forced to call a timeout.
- It continued to be all Indiana Wesleyan in the fifth set as they now lead 7-2.
- Three straight points by the Golden Eagles forced the Wildcats into a timeout as it is now 7-5 after a service ace from Emma Whitley.
- The Wildcats responded with a 3-1 run to make it 10-6 late in the fifth set.
- The Golden Eagles won't back down as a kill and block from Kylie Barron made it 10-9.
- The upset falls short for Cornerstone as Indiana Wesleyan closed out the fifth set on a 5-1 run to win it 15-10 to avoid the upset.
