Men’s Soccer unable to upset #RV Aquinas in narrow 1-0 defeat

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Men's Soccer took on #RV Aquinas which turned into a gritty and aggressive competition. Cornerstone was unable to pull off the upset as they fell 1-0 to the Saints. The Golden Eagles connected with the crossbar late in the match with a shot from Renan Ceccon but could not find the back of the net in the narrow loss. Cornerstone will travel for their last regular season matchup of the year against #19 Madonna on Wednesday, October 30th for a 3 p.m. kickoff. 

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 0 #RV Aquinas - 1

First Half:
  • Aquinas came out of the gates quickly as they tallied two corner kicks in the first eight minutes of the match but received no joy from the crosses and kept the match scoreless early. 
  • Roberto Gutierrez was called on in the 10th minute of the match as he made a save for the Golden Eagles. 
  • Cornerstone's defense continued to battle after they allowed seven shots in the first 30 minutes of the match but kept the match scoreless. 
  • Ricardo Rittersberger struck first in the match for the Saints which gave them the 1-0 advantage in the 33rd minute. 
  • After a chippy first half the score finished at 1-0 with a narrow Aquinas lead. 
Second Half:
  • The second half started much quicker for Cornerstone as Jeff Herrema nearly found the back of the net on a free kick, but his shot sailed just left of the post. 
  • In the 67th minute of the match the Golden Eagles began to find success in the final third after they tallied three quick shots and two corner kicks, yet the match remained at 1-0.
  • Renan Ceccon rifled a shot into the crossbar in the 87th minute that created pure chaos in the Aquinas box, but Cornerstone was unable to put the ball away. 
  • Dani Carrillo earned two late corner kicks in the match in hopes to find a late equalizer but Cornerstone was unable to fight back which gave Aquinas the slim 1-0 victory.
